The sound depends on a combination of factors: the temperature, the density of the ice, the lake’s size and width, and most importantly, the thickness of the ice layer. These elements combine to create a natural symphony, one that shifts and evolves with every passing moment. Rather than listening to the sap, I positioned my Aquarian Audio contact microphone to capture the surface activity. You are hearing the frenetic soundscape of insects and other micro-organisms as they crawl and interact across the smooth bark. This is the acoustic ecology of a hidden world, turning an ancient trunk into a bustling highway. Even a "silent" tree is full of life. When the vineyards fall silent, the foxes speak. 🇬🇧 Winter nights in the south of France. With Grégoire Chauvot, we placed microphones across the @domainemiraluna (Mira Luna) wine estates to capture nocturnal wildlife. Two recordings, two moments. In the first, two fox calls answer each other through the vines, a courtship duet in the cold. In the second, later in the night, a single cry echoes alone. These are red fox vocalizations during the rut, the winter breeding season when males and females seek each other out across territories. The vixen's scream, sharp and unmistakable, can carry over a kilometre through still night air. A sound most people mistake for a human cry. 🇫🇷 Nuits d'hiver dans le sud de la France, en Provence. Avec @gregoirechauvot (Grégoire Chauvot), nous avons posé nos micros à travers les domaines viticoles de Mira Luna pour capter la faune nocturne. Deux enregistrements, deux instants. Dans le premier, deux cris de renard se répondent à travers les vignes, un duo nuptial dans le froid de l'hiver. Dans le second, plus tard dans la nuit, un appel solitaire résonne. Ce sont des vocalises de renard roux en période de rut, la saison des amours hivernale où mâles et femelles se cherchent à travers les territoires. Le cri de la renarde, perçant et reconnaissable, peut porter à plus d'un kilomètre dans le silence de la nuit. A phantom flutes through Père Lachaise 👻🔊 I got fooled again. This morning, I thought I heard the tropical, fluted song of the Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus) among the graves in Paris. A bird that is not visible here. However, the soundscape was lying. It was a Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), the master illusionist of this urban nature. His performance was good, but incomplete, an unfinished loop that betrays the mimicry. He even followed up with an imitation of the Woodpecker. Capturing these acoustic illusions is a constant challenge in field recording. Starlings truly are the wild jokers of the city's wildlife soundscape. Un fantôme flûte au Père Lachaise 👻🔊 Je me suis encore fait avoir. Ce matin, j'ai cru entendre le chant flûté et tropical du Loriot d'Europe (Oriolus oriolus) entre les tombes à Paris. Un oiseau qui n'est pas visible ici. Pourtant, le paysage sonore mentait. C'était un Étourneau sansonnet (Sturnus vulgaris), le maître illusionniste de cette nature urbaine. Sa performance était bonne, mais incomplète, une boucle inachevée qui trahit l'imitation. Il a même enchaîné avec l'imitation du rire du Pic épeiche. Saisir ces illusions acoustiques est un défi constant en field recording. Les étourneaux sont de véritables farceurs de la faune urbaine. In the heart of urban nature, finding a walnut is a win for survival. I captured the sharp, percussive sound of its incisors against the shell using my field recording setup. While this native species still holds its ground in Paris, it faces rising pressure from introduced species like the Eastern Gray Squirrel. Protecting these urban wildlife corridors is essential for biodiversity. This is the secret soundscape of our cemetery gardens.
