There are homes you pass, and homes that stop you entirely. 208 Kooyong Road, Caulfield North is the latter.
Conceived by Dr Ernest Fooks, one of post-war Australia’s most visionary modernist architects, this residence carries its history with an ease that only genuine pedigree allows. Original brown brick, exposed timber beams, lofty ceilings and a signature expansive glazing: the bones are pure Fooks, and they are something else.
What makes this home so compelling is not just its provenance, but the care with which it has been brought into the present. Architect Lani Fixler Studio and builder James Davis of One-off Construction treated the renovation as a labour of love, every decision rooted in respect for the original intent rather than a desire to reimagine it. Joanna Gelbak Landscape Design extended that same sensitivity outdoors, where a new garden entry and revitalised entertaining spaces. Think a classic ‘60s cabana, banquette seating, swings set among landscaped gardens land it somewhere between Palm Springs and Melbourne’s leafy southeast.
Inside, natural light moves through the home the way Fooks always intended: generously, and in step with the seasons. Living spaces spill outward, lines stay clean and the whole thing breathes.
On approximately 702m², it suits families, downsizers or anyone who has always believed that a well-designed home is one of life’s better decisions.
It also happens to be for sale. 🤎

There’s a softness to the way the #earthhouse is experienced.
Solid, monolithic forms are gently broken up by planting, while inside, filtered light moves across textured surfaces and carefully curated spaces.
As you step inside Earth house you find a home that embraces restraint, warmth and a kind of lived-in elegance that reveals itself slowly.

The single-storey home that is #earthhouse gently wraps around a central garden, allowing natural light and landscape to become part of everyday life. Rammed earth walls shape both the exterior and interior, giving the house a grounded, enduring warmth that feels instantly calming.
Honoured to have worked on this project with @omnicon_constructions and @formation_landscapes and thrilled to see it featured on @thelocalproject .

When curating the furniture and art for the #fookshouse, we carefully selected pieces that not only complemented the existing furnishings but also highlighted the textural richness and tonal qualities of the home’s midcentury design. This thoughtful approach ensured a seamless blend of old and new, preserving the home’s inherent character while enhancing its timeless appeal.
