Irony is a poison. I taint my displays of self-appreciation with it. Self-love always coupled with self-awareness. A wry nod and a wink. Make sure you know I don't *actually* like myself that much. For someone who spent most of his life loathing himself, this made sense. It was an honest representation. And then, at some point. Somehow. Someway. I accidentally started to like myself. I still don't feel... *okay* with liking myself. It still feels conceited. Arrogant. Egotistical. Even typing this, my instincts are screaming at me to puncture this with a joke. Just one little hit of self-deprecation. A couple of years ago, the thought of hiring a serious professional photographer to just... ...capture me... ...being beautiful. It was unthinkable. I'd have to be such a conceited, unbearable, arrogant, self-satisfied little... ... ...well. Here we are. Over the coming weeks, I'll be sharing six photos taken by @priddy.please . Beautiful photos. Unburdened by irony. It feels good.

Three months ago I literally typed out the email to withdraw from NZAPP. I'd spent over two months on my routine, and absolutely hated it. I was adrift. Life events had left my self-esteem the lowest it'd been in years, and I'd become convinced that I was a complete pole imposter. Vaguely amusing, yes, but not actually competent - someone coasting on his silliness and showmanship, tolerated by kind people who generously indulged a clueless fool. It's rare that we get to see our forks in the road so clearly. The divergent path where I hit “send” is so, so close to our own. And in that world this story has a shorter, sadder ending. But that email stayed in drafts, and instead I messaged @hell_ishh . Told her where I was at. And in the course of one early-morning session she reminded me why I fell in love with pole in the first place. With that she set off a chain of events that ultimately led us here. Hellish (now a literal LEGEND) will, as she always does, insist that this performance was all me. But the reality is this routine never happens if not for her intervention, mentorship, support, and relentless hype, and for that she has my unending gratitude. I simply would not have reached that stage, far less that podium, were it not for her. I also owe a debt of gratitude to @flying.tiger.monkey , both for her insightful characterisation tips and ideas, and for opening up @limitlessstudionz at such ungodly hours of the morning just so I could train. Additional thanks to @hells_bells_moves for zeroing in on my movement quality, and to @jayhawn for coaching my ignorant ass on the spin pole. And of course to @martinipieface , for knocking it out of the park as poor hapless Patrick. Thanks for coming to the studio at 7:30am to practice being yelled at, bud. I can have my cake and eat it too xx Behind the scenes from my photo shoot with @lance_briefly . What started as a mission to photograph pic 2 ended up as a playful mess and honestly my favourite part of the shoot.
