A masterpiece of rare imagination will enrich BRAFA 2026, presented by Hartford Fine Art - @LamprontiGallery (stand 70):
Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto, Capriccio of Piazza San Marco from the San Marco Basin with the Church of the Redentore (oil on canvas, 130 × 105 cm).
This is a Venetian vision elevated into poetry - an architectural fantasia in which Canaletto brings together the city’s most iconic monuments with brilliant wit and theatrical precision. The unusually high viewpoint, rising twelve to fifteen metres above the ground, offers a striking flourish, perfectly in tune with the freedom and inventive spirit of his London period.
The painting’s luminous silvery palette, impeccable perspective and imaginative dialogue between architectural elements reflect the maturity of his later career. By the mid-1740s, as artistic landscapes evolved across Europe, Canaletto embraced fresh opportunities beyond Venice. Guided by Joseph Smith - his agent and future British consul - he travelled to London in 1746 and cultivated a remarkable circle of patrons, among them the Duke of Richmond, Prince Lobkowitz and Hugh Percy, future Duke of Northumberland.
During these years, the artist expanded his repertoire with serene pastoral views of Badminton and Warwick Castle, magnificent prospects of the Thames, and the celebrated Interior of the Rotunda at Ranelagh. These works combine Venetian precision with a receptive engagement with English scenery and society. The capriccio revealed at BRAFA embodies this spirit of renewal - a canvas both anchored in Venice and enriched by the imaginative freedom that defined his English period. Its elevated panorama even anticipates the visionary daring that later captivated Turner, who portrayed Canaletto painting outdoors during one of his Venetian stays.
For collectors, connoisseurs and admirers of Venetian art, this canvas offers a rare encounter with #Canaletto at his most imaginative - a harmonious fusion of mastery, memory and artistic freedom.

Happy Valentine's Day!
Today we celebrate love with the eternal tale of Angelica and Medoro, narrated in Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso.
Medoro, a young warrior, is badly wounded in battle. Angelica, a princess of timeless beauty, finds him and, moved by compassion, tends to his wounds. She nurses him back to health in the humble home of a kind shepherd and his family, depicted on the left side of the painting. As Medoro recovers, the two grow inseparable blossoming into a tender love.
In a moment of devotion, they carve their names into the walls of their refuge, sealing their bond for eternity. But love’s joy soon turns to tragedy—Orlando, once madly in love with Angelica, stumbles upon the inscription. Overcome with jealousy and heartbreak, he descends into a furious madness, setting the stage for one of the most iconic episodes of Renaissance literature.
Painting shows is “Angelica and Medoro” by Domenico Fiasella, also called Il Sarzana (Saran, 1589 - 1669, Genoa), oil on canvas, 175 x 215 cm
