The future of tourism workers stands in the balance.
On Wednesday, the LA City Council voted 9-6 to advance a motion introduced by Council President @mhdcd8 that would delay wage increases and health care access in the Olympic Wage. The City Council will take the motion up again in the coming weeks.
Thank you to all who joined us at City Hall on Wednesday. Tourism workers and community members shared over two hours of powerful testimony highlighting the transformative impact the wage increase has already had: finally being able to afford needed medical procedures and see specialists, paying off medical debt, keeping up with the rising cost of rent, and simply spending quality time with their families.
Speakers also warned of the dangers of our elected leaders caving to corporate extortion. The tourism industry’s lobbyists are wielding a measure to repeal the city’s business tax to pressure our City leaders to cut wage increases and delay increases in health care
Under the existing policy, which Council passed exactly a year ago this week, hotel and airport workers will see an increase to $25 on July 1, wages they and their families are counting on to make ends meet. That pay raise falls right in the middle of the World Cup, the most lucrative competition in sporting history. The workers who will serve the World Cup fans flying into LAX and staying in our hotels deserve nothing short of what they fought for and won, gains that Council promised them when they voted it into law.
Email LA City Council President Harris-Dawson Councilmember, your Councilmember, and @mayorofla to urge them to stand strong and protect workers.
🌷 Last week, LAANE honored the bold and extraordinary work of Adine Forman, Executive Director of @htalosangeles ; and the groundbreaking strides of the Women of @ibewlocal18 ’s Utility Pre-Craft Trainee (UPCT) Program at the Women for a New Los Angeles Luncheon.
We are so grateful to those who joined us in honoring the visionaries whose work and dedication are building lasting change in our communities.
On behalf of the entire LAANE team, thank you to our amazing community of supporters for making this work possible.
