🌲Exhibiting Artist Spotlight Laura Fedynyszyn (she / her) Memorial for trees not yet fallen II Artist Statement Memorial for trees not yet fallen II focuses on invasive species and the threats they hold to Southern Ontario’s varied ecosystems. This piece imagines an ecosystem shattered by spotted lantern flies, an invasive species that devours a wide variety of plant life. This is an invasive species that is on the cusp of the Canadian border poised to come up from the U.S. where they have already established. This piece uses compelling and beautiful aesthetics to draw viewers in where they are faced with the darker realities of our climate crises and issues surrounding sustainability. Interview Excerpt Produced in Partnership with @modernmississauga Tell us a bit about your art practice. I’m trained as a printmaker but my practice has expanded and shifted to incorporate installation. I don't have a large studio space but printmaking allows me to make multiples quickly, so I can make cumulatively big work in the small footprint of my home studio. Thematically my work all relates to the environment and sustainability. I struggle with climate anxiety and my work has been a way for me to process those feelings, and also help raise awareness to some of the issues that most concern me. My piece for the Festival of Trees centres around the spotted lantern fly, an invasive species currently in the US, close to the Canadian border. They are a beautiful insect and could easily be misconstrued as a moth or something harmless. My sculpture seeks to inform and spread awareness about this potentially devastating insect. ✨Exhibition on view until Sunday, December 14 Small Arms Inspection Building 🎟️ Admission: PWYC, suggested donation: $5.00 📸: Images 1– 3, Gabriella Bank / Sanborg Productions. Mark April Fool’s Day by visiting Fool’s Gold at Evergreen Brick Works! Evergreen is proud to co-present this exhibition with the Invasive Species Centre, a non-profit mobilizing action against invasive species that harm the environment, economy and society. A hub for collaboration and knowledge sharing, @invasivespeciescentre works to prevent the introduction and spread of high-risk invasive species in Canada by connecting stakeholders with knowledge and technology. 📅 Come see this free art exhibit all Earth Month long—on until April 30! 📍Evergreen Brick Works (550 Bayview Ave, Toronto) 🕒 9am – 5pm daily #TorontoArt #InvasiveSpecies #Biodiversity #EvergreenBrickWorks #Toronto

Launching today! Fool’s Gold is a new installation at Evergreen Brick Works, featuring the artwork of Laura Fedynyszyn.🐟 About this installation, Laura says, “Fool’s Gold deals with themes of climate change and environmentalism. It is a print installation consisting of a school of fish that represents the current and fragile state of southern Ontario’s aquatic ecosystems. Well meaning citizens have been releasing pet goldfish into the wild for years. However, this highly adaptive species of fish is now steadily taking over Southern Ontario’s freshwater ponds and rivers, reducing indigenous species of fish and plants. This art installation focuses on a specific and quantifiable crisis and explores it through visual means of representation that is enticing and draws the viewer in.” Laura Fedynyszyn (@la.fed ) is a printmaker from Toronto. She completed her BFA in the OCAD University Printmaking Program and went on to study Art Conservation at Fleming College. Her artistic practice blends these two fields of study through reuse and reimagining of old materials, with themes related to nature conservancy and climate change. Presented in partnership with the @invasivespeciescentre , the show is free and available to view in Young Centre at Evergreen Brick Works from 9am - 5pm, March 1-April 30th.
