🌱 Kentucky State University is shaping the future of agriculture with the support of a USDA Capacity Building Grant! On October 8, 2024, we hosted our second workshop for middle and high school students from Carter G. Woodson Academy, introducing them to the world of commercial agriculture on small farms. 🚜 Topics like animal health, hydroponics, agribusiness, and Ag-Tech (drones in farming) were explored at KSU’s Harold R. Benson Research & Demonstration Farm.
Through hands-on learning, students gained valuable skills for sustainable farming and career opportunities in agriculture. We're excited to continue this project with K-12 schools across the Commonwealth, building a brighter future in agriculture! 🌾

During the summer of 2024, under the direction of Dr. Nzaramyimana Theoneste, Kentucky State University’s Urban Agriculture team, including student Nia Ragland, worked tirelessly to provide fresh, locally-grown produce to areas lacking access. We cultivated 15 different species of fruits and vegetables while learning how to manage an Urban Agriculture farm from start to finish.
Starting with tilling the land, we used plastic mulching to protect crops from weeds and pests, conserve moisture, and regulate soil temperature. Crops like zucchini, squash, cucumbers, watermelon, and collard greens thrived, many of which were started in the greenhouse to ensure strong, healthy growth before being transplanted. Our team also dealt with challenges such as diamondback moth infestations and the zucchini yellow mosaic virus, applying solutions to maintain the health of our crops.
By the end of the summer, we harvested an impressive 7,127 pounds of produce, all of which was donated to local community shelters, students, faculty, and staff. Our most successful crops were zucchini, squash, and cucumbers. As we look ahead to future projects, we plan to adjust management practices to improve weed control and crop growth.
