//// K Y L E S I M O N //// Featured Artist :: Season 6 :: Project 5/43 COPY THAT! Block & Intaglio Printmaking Videos on GroundworkArts.com Kyle Simon works like a cartographer of wonder, mapping the intersections of art, science, and the stories hidden in the natural world. After years as a master printer in New York, where he collaborated with artists like James Turrell and Kiki Smith, he made his way to Joshua Tree and widened his practice into sculpture, sound, and experimental forms. His work draws on astronomy, archaeology, and myth, tracing how light, sound, and perception shape what we believe to be real. As the founder of Farrington Press, he continues to expand the possibilities of printmaking, inviting artists and audiences into new realms of technical play and sensory storytelling. #kylesimon #farringtonpress #printmaker #storyteller #cartographer

Aquatint is one of the more confusing techniques in printmaking it often feels magical, to me it is straight magic. It is a printmaking technique used with copper etching to create areas of tone rather than lines. It works by forming a dpi or dot pattern of tiny dots on a metal plate, which are etched for different lengths of time to build light to dark shading on a single plate. Short etches create pale tones, while longer etches produce deep, rich tones of whatever color of ink is applied. Artists like Francisco Goya, Mary Cassatt, and David Hockney used aquatint for its unique effects to tone a single plate or add color to multiple plates. We will post some examples of aquatint in prints in the coming posts. 📸 @ceciliacanodaly and @sarah_chance

Full moon tonight got me remembering last month’s Sirens show. Here is a small etching with hand coloring I made to plan out how the show would work.

Last week, on 10/17, the night of the full Hunter’s Moon, we brought back The Sirens after a 7-year hiatus. We convinced a group of people to trek up the mountain and share the experience with us. The Sirens is a musical odyssey where we use a telescope to play the moon and planets like a theremin. The telescope is equipped with photodiodes that send control voltages to a Eurorack synth setup. The show was a duet between Brian Weitz @geobriensystem (synth wizard) and Kyle Simon (telescope operator) and was recorded live by Audio Focus. The full performance will be released by the DC-based record label, Outside Time @outsidetime__ Our amazing friend @lilystockman blessed us with an original painting for the event, which will grace the cover of the album. The gale-force winds held off until a few hours after the show, and with the help of great friends and collaborators, we pulled off something truly special. Huge thanks to @cahootsgrub for the incredible Indian grub, @kinguvthecastle for the ice cream, @feathericci for the sound, @levcara for keeping us on track, @deciduoso & @dangowy for their support, @xodsxods for being able to do anything and everything, @chasemcbride and @spoart for the photos, @heatherday , @gveeve @danjohnanderson 🙏 and to everyone else who has helped to make Farrington real. Okay, now back to work! Photos @spoart
