It might be a late post for Tessellation Tuesday. But itās when the bats come out to play!

Had a great time participating in last weekendās Brush Off @themuseumkitchener . Huge thanks for the support, and a big shoutout to the other artists ā the talent in that room was incredible.

Better late than never for Tessellation Tuesday!
Today I was playing with this tessellation featuring eight birds. It wasnāt actually as difficult as I expected, but it was incredibly fun to piece together.
I donāt think itās quite a finished piece yet. Iāve been thinking about how to incorporate more traditional media, and this one is definitely calling for a next step. Paint? Print? Hmmmā¦

Itās the first day of semester two, which means an afternoon of meetings. Iāve always found that sketching during meetings is my way of staying present and organized.
I know that when others peek in my direction I might seem disconnected or checked out. But for me, itās actually the best way to stay focusedāallowing me to process the discussions, think through next steps, and see the bigger picture.
Why only two? I ran out of ink! šļøš§

I felt a little uninspired last week but this week I pushed myself to finish this squid pattern I started a few months ago. Itās a bit of a brain-bender when you see the whole thing, but every arm has its place and the problem solving was definitely motivating! š¦š

Iāve been exploring the logic of tessellations for about a decade. Itās always been about the process... Working the variables and the seams until the pattern finally clicks.
But after ten years of fish and geometry, Iām looking for a new direction. Iām ready to take this philosophy into new spaces and different kinds of problems.
The āFear and Delightā of the unknown is exactly where Iām sitting right now. I have some ideas for where I could go⦠but Iām always open to suggestions.

When the creative tank is running low, I find myself coming back to the fish. Itās a familiar geometry and a reliable shape to solve when my brain needs a rest.
With that being said⦠this week I decided to keep going with the illustration even when the form was complete. I think Iāll revisit this idea a little later on but for now I think Iāll step away from the screen. How do I know when a design like this is finished? My eyes start to hurt.

This is a small sketchbook I carried with me while traveling this summer. My adventures took me to Alberta for a week and these were quick sketches I made while wandering the incredible space.
Part of my resolution for this year is to share more of my explorations and process⦠so hereās a small peak.
I have piles of books and pages filled with variables, failures, and half-solved puzzles. I usually keep them on the shelf once the logic is settled, but Iāve realized that, to finish the work, I need to share.

When I was sketching this tired little rodent / rat-like creature.. couldnāt help but remember The Secret of NIMH. The rats there werenāt just survivors⦠they were a community.

January 2016: The 365 Project Begins!
Ten years ago, I committed to a daily practice of discovery. At the time⦠I had no idea how much it would reshape my entire creative process.
Inspired by the āDays of the Year,ā these selected images from January offer a peek into my early thinking⦠and a taste of things to come (including my very first tessellation!).
Itās a record of the trial and error that built the foundation for what I create today.
Is there a day or image that stands out to you?
