Orange is the new Black.
I have always been a fan of bold colours. May is my birthday month, so I figured I would share a little life story. I remember in year 5, my sister was working at THE GAP and bought me a bright orange coat that I loved pairing with my bright orange tracksuit. I was reminded last night about my bright orange laces. My cousin was born and raised in London, and when she moved to Wolves, it must have been during my orange laces phase, because she said she remembers me as the boy with the orange laces.
I love the colour orange, but I love what it represents more. What a lot of people do not know is that for all the pink in my posts, it is not even in my top three favourites. When I think about my city, the black and orange are more than just colours, they are the Wolves, it is in my DNA. Too many people in Wolves are way too happy to stay comfortable in the shadows. But me in my bright orange laces, at ten years old, walking from Low Hill to School in Park Village was my earliest way of refusing to blend in.
What was true then is also true now, the orange is a loud statement, but I was not even trying to make one.
Before linking up with my family last night, I was at the
@weareoutofoffice__ IRL launch event in Birmingham and met some great and inspiring people who pay attention to detail and made me feel instantly at home in a room full of strangers.
When
@shempinnock said “I don’t dress up, there’s just nothing boring in my wardrobe”, that spoke me. I am looking forward to exploring more spaces with people who refuse to accept mediocre.
I am at peace when I am allowed to be me, when I am allowed to express myself freely, whether it is through my music, my storytelling, or just getting dressed up in something bright and taking an unknown adventure with people who are happy being free and spontaneous too. Huge thanks
@reubencruz_ and friends for hosting such a great space, and thanks
@priscillacameron_ for the invite. I also need to slip in a shoutout to
@shakeitwell_bravitojuice for keeping us all hydrated!
