Yellow Bird, 2026
𝓨𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓸𝔀 𝓑𝓲𝓻𝓭 was a midwinter offering, between a storied Moko Jumbie and myself, about the necropolitics embedded within the Caribbean carnivalesque. Personal on many levels, it involved precious embroideries, my own singing voice, and a lot of preparation and negotiation!
In 2010 I left Trinidad for Fortress Europe, bringing nothing but my radical postcolonial education, rly good looks and a handwritten passport with me. When the arbiters of these cities showed their teeth, I hid my wings, shed my skin and began to sing from somewhere deep and ugly. I've got this pretty bell of a textile object that he wears….
So of course it took a village to put this together - really appreciative of my colleagues, peers & loved-ones who did professional & personal favours to ensure the making of something beautiful. I am looking forward to future iterations of this project with the amazingly talented stiltwalkers I grew up watching, nurtured by, among others,
