Today we rigged out some pretty large storm damaged branches from a cottonwood. Yesterday, we had the opportunity to talk with Megan Kaminski’s students about trees, insects, forestry, arboriculture in Marvin Grove in the KU campus. Megan is a very talented and inspiring poet, educator, friend, colleague AND Tree Talks Alum. The next Tree Talks is in less than a week. The class we met with is part of the Environmental Studies Program at KU. It’s called “Care Practices: Ecology, Community, Self” This interdisciplinary course explores practices of care for the ecologies and communities of which we are a part—as well as liberatory modes of self-care. It explores our local ecologies through field trips and community-engaged learning and connect what students learn to larger environmental issues, including species extinction, climate change, and the uneven distribution of harms across people and place.

This morning @kugrounds and @kufieldstation alongside @indigenousku and @sunrisemvmtku burned the prairie acre! Environmental studies student, Sarah Reuben-Hallock was there and explained the importance of an event like this for the natural area. “It’s important to steward places like Prairie Acre because they’re among the few spots on campus where people can really connect with the prairie ecosystem, which many Kansans don’t often get to do. Prairie Acre has significant educational value to the broader KU community, and we have a responsibility to care for it and demonstrate how important this ecosystem is,” Reuben-Hallock said. Congratulations to these wonderful groups on a successful burn!

Botanical Belonging is working with KU Capstone Environmental Studies students to develop educational workshops about native plants! We had a wonderful visit with one of the student groups out on the farm today. We have over 80 species of seedlings in the greenhouse, and the students got to learn all about Patti’s journey toward stewarding native plants and creating the nonprofit. So grateful to work with inspiring young people in our community!

On November 21 we have the very special honor of helping sponsor a showing of Prairie Prophecy, a documentary exploring the accomplishments of Wes Jackson. Jackson is the founder of The Land Institute and a KU alum. After the showing, Geography and Atmospheric Science professor Chris Brown and director of the Environmental Studies Program Nate Brunsell will be joined by other local environmental enthusiasts on a discussion panel. This event is free and we would love to see you!
