A Coming Together, 2021–2025
Four years ago, in a time of contraction — when the city felt divided and uncertain — we found an old building and decided to open the doors.
We called it KOU Studios — A Coming Together.
Born out of restriction, KOU was built on openness. What started as an experiment quickly became a living space for what Vancouver needed most: connection. We hosted dinners and pop-ups, sound healing and movement classes, fundraisers, art shows, and community gatherings of every kind. It became a place where people of all walks could show up, share ideas, and belong.
We never had a script — only the belief that space can hold possibility if people are given the chance to shape it. Over the years, hundreds passed through these doors — artists, makers, chefs, healers, small business owners, and friends — all leaving something behind.
All around us, heritage buildings sit empty — priced out of possibility. The commercial real estate market is softening, yet the city’s rigidity remains. There’s a gap between what’s technically allowed and what’s actually possible, and spaces like ours are what fall through it.
This winter, our chapter here comes to an end. After years of trying to fit a living, breathing creative concept into outdated city frameworks, the red tape finally caught up with us. The layers of permitting, costs, and compliance made it impossible to stay.
And so, this old building — with its trusses and beams and a century of stories — may now sit empty, awaiting demolition.
But what we built here mattered. We saw what can happen when people come together — when a building becomes a vessel for community, collaboration, and joy.
To everyone who showed up, shared, created, moved, cooked, healed, built, or simply spent time with us — thank you.
You made this space what it was.
We’re already onto new ground and can’t wait to share — keep following here and subscribe to our newsletter to join us on our next journey.
Our shop will remain open in person and online until we sell out of everything so please come and visit us!
