Congratulations to Badru Temitayo (@badrutemitayobadru_ ) on his upcoming solo exhibition, We Are Gods, at Museum Rijswijk (@museumrijswijk ) in the Netherlands. The exhibition showcases Badru’s recent studio experiments, blending hand-embroidered textiles and indigenous fabrics to explore themes rooted in Yoruba myths and spirituality. His work is the result of extensive research into traditional fabric-making techniques, such as Adire Eleko, and the spiritual symbolism embedded in various indigenous motifs. By reinterpreting these elements, Badru offers a contemporary perspective on ancient Yoruba mythology, while emphasizing the cultural significance of aso (cloth) within Yoruba society. The exhibition opens December 1, 2024 and run till March 2, 2025. Images: 1&2 - Detail shot of works featured in the exhibition. Yoruba fabric Aso oke has been something have always been fascinated and attached with due to my love for antique and historical objects, which now becomes a part of me. This is a piece from a series of work I started at the just concluded residency at the @kobomojeair residency space titled THREADS OF LIFE, where I explore the Aso oke fabric beyond being a material of fashion but now in a context of being a space that has documented emotions, feelings and experiences of the weavers, owners, or spaces which it has passes or engaged with. Title: Threads of Life (series) Medium: pastel (mixed media) Size:16.5 inches by 34 inches Year:2024

Join us for an open studio and presentation with Ana Hupe (@anahupe ) and Ganiu Ismail (@ganiu__ismail ) at Kòbọmọjẹ́ Artist Residency. 🗓️ 12 September | 4 PM - 6 PM This event marks the finale of Hupe and Ismail’s 4-weeks residency at K-AiR, where they explored the cultural layers of “asọ (cloth)” in Yoruba society. Hupe developed a visual “oríkì” and tapestry centered around the theme of looted Yoruba objects, while Ismail’s mixed-media works highlight the technologies and social contexts of Asọ-oke. Beyond asọ as a dress and body adornment, their research projects pay homage to the community of female weavers dedicated to producing these intricate fabrics, and advocates for a cultural understanding distinct from Western paradigms. 📍Ibadan Cultural Landscape Exploration To welcome our current residents, Ana Hupe (@anahupe ) and Ganiu Ismail (@ganiu__ismail ), we embarked on a community-building trip filled with studio visits, film screenings, intellectual dialogues, and a market day. We explored the studios of rising artists Badru Temitayo (@badrutemitayo_ ) and Toromade Tosin (@toromade_t ), attended the weekly Thursday Film Series (@tfsmovieclubui ) at the Institute of African Studies in the University of Ibadan, visited Tunde Odunlade Arts Gallery (@tundeodunladearts ) for a screening of the Ebrohimie Road (@ebrohimie_road_movie ) documentary, and experienced the historic Oje market. At K-AiR, we believe that these encounters and exchanges are essential in helping artists understand the diverse cultural landscape of Ibadan, and immerse themselves in the city’s rich creative energy. These experiences also serve as an inspiration for their projects at K-AiR, while drawing from Ibadan’s history as the epicenter of cultural and artistic activities in the 1950s and ’60s. Stay tuned to our page for more updates on the current residency cycle. #AnaHupe #GaniuIsmail #KAiR #Ibadan #Kòbọmọjẹ́Residency #ArtistResidency #DestinationIbadan

Join us in welcoming Ganiu Ismail (@ganiu__ismail ) to Kòbọmọjẹ́ Artist Residency. At K-AiR, Ismail will research and create artworks that explore textiles as archives of memory, forms of care, community, and their sociopolitical layers. This project draws from Ismail’s deep fascination with Yoruba cultural heritage, while taking inspiration from the fashion of the 80s and 90s, and traditional fabrics like Aso Oke and Sanyan. According to Ismail, “This residency is a great platform to highlight the significant role of women in fashion and culture.” Stay tuned to our page for more updates on the 2024 residency cycle. #GaniuIsmail #KAiR #Ibadan #Kòbọmọjẹ́Residency #ArtistResidency #DestinationIbadan

Philanthropy in Art In a recent feature on CNN Africa Avant-Garde (@cnn / cnnafrica), our founder, Hakeem Adedeji (@hakeemadedeji ), shared insights into his journey as an art collector and his dedication to building infrastructures that enable artists to thrive beyond commercial success. Hakeem Adedeji is known for his commitment to providing platforms that elevate artists’ careers. What started as a hobby during his student days has evolved into a lifelong legacy, where art is not just seen as an object of beauty but as an investment in the creative process itself. Through his support of various stakeholders within the art ecosystem—from art writers and academics to workshops and incubator programs—Hakeem Adedeji has been instrumental in establishing the much-needed infrastructures and institutions that contribute to a vibrant art community. This led him to establish Red Heritage (@redheritageart ), an organization dedicated to supporting the aspirations of creative individuals and initiatives. Through grants for artwork production, ambitious exhibitions, educational programs, research, and scholarships, Red Heritage has become a key contributor to the burgeoning art landscape in Nigeria and beyond. Additionally, Hakeem Adedeji founded Kòbọmọjẹ́ Artist Residency (@kobomojeair ) in Ibadan, providing artists with a space to develop their research and creative projects. This residency is not only a haven for artistic growth but also a place where artists can rest, and immerse themselves in Ibadan’s rich cultural history. For Hakeem Adedeji, patronage and philanthropy in the arts are vital, especially for artists in Africa who require both financial and moral support to sustain full-time creative practices. Special thanks to Samuel Ajobiewe (@atelierajobiewe ), Akanimoh Umoh (@akanimohumoh ), and Nengi Omuku (@nengiomuku ) for generously sharing their experiences with @redheritageart and @kobomojeair . The CNN Africa Avant-Garde feature also highlights other philanthropists and stakeholders making a lasting impact on the African art ecosystem. #HakeemAdedeji #ArtPatron #Philanthropy #CNN #CNNAfricaAvantGarde #RedHeritage #RedHeritageArt #Kòbọmọjẹ́Residency
