I wanted to do a post to highlight the process, all the thoughts sweat and tears put into this project but I had way waaaay tooooo many pictures so here’s a pretty collage about it. ⭐️🌱🌈☀️ Roots in threads is kind of a love letter to the land, I wanted to balance the tangible and intangible values and how it exists in so many forms in our culture and heritage. The focal point of this work was the Aflaj irrigation system that has been used for centuries on the same exact land that we live on today and that still serves the community exactly like it did a thousand years ago. It highlights how this system did not only provide ways of life like water and plants but also brought together a community that cannot possibly benefit from it if they didn’t hold strong values and respect within thumbs and towards one another. It’s built by the people for the people. ⭐️ The talli that our grandmothers used to make out of gold and silver threads, use it for multiple dresses throughout their lifetime and pass it on to their daughters, the talli is used to map out the irrigation system that spreads out through what’s now Al Ain and Al Buraimi, the map dates back to the 1950s and still shows many canals that are used to this day. ⭐️ On the back of the dresses (كنادير) I used natural pigments to dye patterns using turmeric, indigo, dried basil, beetroot and lime leaves. The patterns are inspired by architecture in my hometown, seasonal agricultural practices like the use of المرايغ، sun dials that were used to time and devise everyone share of the water, and big spirals. ⭐️ The process was so incredibly fun, learned so much (special thanks to Aysha, Arwa, Sarah, Donia and Shahad) 💌💌💌💌💌This installation is one of my favorite things I’ve done, very close and dear to the heart🫀

Untitled 120 * 90 cm Acrylic & oil on canvas 🌼🦪💖🌺🦢🌀🪻 This piece contemplates the profound impact of love on one’s perspective, exploring the realization of the immense love a person holds for everything around them. It highlights how this realization remains constant regardless of the life stage they are in, showing how it alters their outlook and behavior towards life. This transformative realization, akin to enlightenment, fundamentally shifts how individuals engage with the world around them. I wanted this piece to feel very feminine & colorful, for the viewer to feel the radiance of life and love through the work, & most importantly, to reflect the essence of Sherina, the muse behind the artwork. This artwork is dedicated to you, مع كل الحب، شكرا شرينة.
