🎙️ “ I’m Kelsey Graywill - originally from CO, but have been in Durham for about a decade. I’m a neuroscience researcher turned artist, currently operating @hyperlocaldurham , a place-based art and storytelling project mainly known for its educational and interactive zines exploring the local community.
College scholarships brought me to Durham in 2014, but it wasn’t until returning in 2021, following a brief stint in London for grad school, that I really found belonging: I quit my soul-crushing job in ✨pharmaceutical marketing consulting✨to teach kids in Durham public schools how to ride bikes, which ultimately led me the present: repurposing an industrial vending machine to dispense educational zines. Reviewer #3 of the first journal I submitted my master’s study to told me I should consider “explicating more perspicaciously” and promptly rejected my manuscript. To date this is still the most pretentious thing anyone has ever said to me, and gratefully after over 3 years of refining, rerunning data analyses, revising, and transatlantic correspondence, the next journal I submitted to accepted the manuscript. You can now find my research on the visual language of pain in the December 2024 Journal of Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity and Art.
My two years in London completing my MSc were pretty marred by the pandemic, but because I was attending the only master’s program in the world dedicated to neuroaesthetics, I was determined to graduate having designed and conducted my own original research blending my interest in cognitive science, pain perception, and visual art. Proud of my first first-authorship and excited for more years of explicating perspicaciously ✨
In what has been an absolutely packed season of change for me, I’m hoping that this will mark a productive and fruitful era of creative entrepreneurship through Graywill Creative, LLC (‼️)
Finally took the plunge and launched this beast of a project on Kickstarter! Every month for the last two years I’ve been creating new worldbuilding resources for fantasy creators - a byproduct of amassing some-30k-odd followers during lockdown while I created my own fantasy webcomic. I’m proud, nervous, and excited to see all of that work culminate in this Kickstarter project. 🗺️📜✍️

When my parents moved out of our childhood home in Colorado, I felt like I could never forgive them for it. I have come to understand and accept their reasons for it, and I know how hard it was for them to leave the house they raised their family in. This Christmas, after a two year hiatus from acrylic painting, I wanted to recreate the view from our old home for them to keep in their new home in Virginia.

Baby's first race in the books: Running of the Bulls 8k! A little more scuffed up than I would like after crashing my bike earlier this week, but so so glad that I did it - beat my personal pace record and not a shabby result in my division either.
About this time a year ago I had just bought my first bike, and a few months later in October I picked up running. I tend to challenge myself without specific milestones in mind, so doing a race was different - hopefully next time it will be with more training, goals, consistency. Prior to a year ago I was a devoted coach potato and never in my life did I consider myself athletic, definitely not someone who would run a race for fun. Really grateful to be where I am now.
