So glad we got to connect with @jonathandbennett , @jaymesv , and the folks at @glaad in Palm Springs. @SarahKateEllis shared their latest efforts to combat the FCCâs current campaign to apply âwarning labelsâ to television programs that feature LGBTQ+ people. You know the FCC, the folks who spend most of their time worrying about Jimmy Kimmelâs jokes. They are also pressuring networks to warn viewers against watching our stories.
As a queer story teller, Iâm obviously against any effort to restrict, stigmatize, or other, stories about our community. The FCC cannot directly set TV content ratings, but under this administration, it has a clear pattern of pressuring TV networks to comply with the political agenda of the Federal government.
The public has until May 22 to submit comments and tell the FCC that LGBTQ characters and stories on television do not harm anyone â our lives should not be compared to content that is violent, coarse, sexual, or includes drug use. Follow the link in my stories to learn more about how to help.
Revisiting this beautiful book by @thegooddeath has been oddly comforting â âSmoke Gets in Your Eyes & Other Lessons from the Crematoriumâ is a morbidly hilarious and insightful read about death and the living. In case I forget to make a will, please bury me under a Joshua Tree and hire professional mourners to wail. I want a green burial, no casket, just wet wet mud. Well, sand. Second choice: Viking funeral pyre đ„đ„đ„
Been a rough month, but grateful to weather it together. Took a quick trip down the PCH, driving parallel to the setting sun. The sun will always set, yâallâdonât take it for granted. Weâll always miss you, Albee.
We are heartbroken to share the news that our cat Albee has passed away. 15 years ago, we visited an animal rescue in Burbank, not sure if we were ready to adopt, but the moment we saw the little kitten in a cage alone with an eye infection, we knew he had to bring him home with us. Found behind a dumpster, he had a feral streak that we adored, and we count earning his trust over the years as one of the greatest accomplishments of our lives.
The three of us spent every waking moment together; he would wake us every morning and greet us at the door every time we came home, meowing and pressing his head into our hands for attention. Albee was a beloved part of our family, brightening every day, breaking up every argument, and becoming a constant source of joy that anchored our lives.Â
Strong of opinion, he was a cat with a real point of view, and his unique personality was a source of both comic relief and genuine perspective, grounding us whenever life became overwhelming.Â
A reluctant traveler, Albee moved across the country with us twice, to New York and back to LA, and out to a homestead in the desert, where he would hide during the day but become strangely brave at night, keeping watch on the screened windowsill of whatever room we were in. His favorite holiday was Christmas, and he would climb up into the tree as a kitten, until he grew up he and brought it crashing to the ground.Â
Albee made his television debut in the pilot of EastSiders, delivering a star-making turn, but refusing to appear again until the final season, despite fan demand for him to reprise his role. Albee was the gay equivalent of 2.5 kids, thatâs how much we loved him. Every song was about him, and every day with him was a gift.Â
In recent years, especially, we understood how lucky we were to have this kind of connection with him. Every night, he would settle in between us on the couch to watch TV, and a day wouldnât go by that he didnât crawl onto one of our laps, purring, and whatever we were doing we would take the moment to stroke his forehead and stop time together.
Our lives, truly, wonât be the same without him. But he will always be a part of us.
