Recently, I've been meditating on art and its relationship to Nature. Boudin's quote captures in words - which escaped me - the immediacy and intimacy of observing and interpreting the living world in real time. There is a rich history of artists recording the natural world in paint as the moment unfolds around them - sometimes better and more understanding than using a camera!

Have you ever considered how our ancestors seemed to carry such wisdom and insight, and it is somehow forgotten or tossed aside by contemporaries for being out of touch with the context of modern society? We've all heard the adage that those who do not learn from the past are damned to repeat it. This quote from Cicero is no less true today than it was in 40 B.C. - and the words and ideas of our forebears are no less true now than when they were spoken/written/shared. There are lessons still to be gleaned from those who came before us.

Yesterday, I took some time to sit outside and observe the trees - specifically the branches, the fractals. Then, I sketched what I saw - charcoal on newsprint - art inspired by the repeating patterns in Nature. It became a dress rehearsal for the Saturday, May 23rd DRAWING FRACTALS class I'm leading near Ohiopyle, PA. Learn more on my website at /upcoming-events
Whether we are observing Nature as a muse for art or in acknowledgement that it is art, reveling in the wonder and beauty of the natural world is a way of deepening and strengthening our relationship with it.

I recently overheard a conversation between a father and his young daughter on a trail in a State Park that broke my heart:
π
GIRL: Daddy, isn't this beautiful?
FATHER: (looking down at his phone) Hmm?
GIRL: Look at the trees!
FATHER: (looking up) Yeah. I see. A fortune in timber being wasted.
GIRL: What do you mean?
FATHER: Nothing. You're right. It's pretty. Let's go get ice cream.
GIRL: Any flavor I want?
FATHER: Don't see why not.
π
One: what a wasted opportunity to share in the beauty of Nature with your child; Two: why bother coming into a public green space if that's how you feel about Nature; Three: you owe your child an education and a future on a liveable planet, moron!

Art is just another form of connection. Being grounded and aware, observing and recording what we see in Nature, and then interpreting that through our own creative lens...that is highlighting a deep and meaningful relationship between the artist and the muse.

As the old saying goes, 'there's a rhyme and a reason, a time and a season for all things.' Nature is not hurried in its cycles, nor unsure in its rhythms. The natural world is steady and steadfast. Impatience is a symptom of our species.

There is a reason quotes about mothers and Nature often focus on the nurturing, creative, and powerful forces they share. Throughout human history, authors, poets, and thinkers, have emphasized the deeply universal connection between the life-giving nature of the Earth and the unconditional love of a mother. There is no denying the nurturing, grounding, and often-time fierce aspects of both. Happy Mother's Day to every being courageous enough to step into the role!

What is art but an interpretation of our observations of Nature? Even sketches of buildings seem to lack solidity until they are placed in a landscape, a skyline against a sky. Comedy and tragedy existed in the living world long before us. We may have developed a way to represent and present our inspirations as art, but not before observing it first in Nature.

Society has conditioned us to place value on the collection of material goods and wealth versus experience. We consume to create reminders that pale to the conscious act of being in a time, in a place, creating something memorable. We should promote the value of active participation and the wealth of knowledge and experience that comes from making memories over buying yet another expensive gadget or thing of convenience.
