Artist Statement:
We turn to flowers at moments that matter. To celebrate. To express love. To mourn. Flowers are given with the understanding that they won’t last, and that knowledge gives the gesture its meaning. When something fades it doesn’t lose value. The act and intention of love hold the value.
This work is inspired by the writing of James Baldwin, bell hooks, and Nikki Giovanni, whose approaches to love move beyond sentimentality. In their work, love is not simply an object of romantic desire, it’s a lived and chosen act. It carries joy alongside responsibility and risk, because love exists so damn close to grief. To love is to remain open, even when loss is possible.
I want the flowers come to represent how we love one another: fully, briefly, and in many forms. We can’t keep what fades, but we can give. We can show up. We can remember. Nothing we love exists outside of time, including ourselves, and still the act of love remains.
For all the people asking about the bears jacket…..This is the best I can do *right now* without getting sued lol.
