To our dear, brilliant and fucking hilarious friend Jessica. Bless you for all the gifts you gave us. Knowing you and having you as friend and mentor changed my life. You gave me so fucking much. Watching you as an artist taught me more than anything else has. My beautiful rust belt sister (she is a Sarnia girl) love you and promise I will keep using all the gifts you’ve given to me. I of course will never be able to move as poetically or embodied beautiful flowing water like you can but I do promise to take you with in every thing I do. Bless the your beautiful sister Angela who took the most incredible care of you. PS I hope you don’t mind me sharing your text gassing me up I just want the world to know I am Jessica approved. 🙌🏾

Join us on May 3rd for 𝘉𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵, 𝘉𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘢, a double feature performance program with Maya Ben David (@mayabendavidmbd ) and Kiera Boult (@kieraboult ). The first half of the program takes place on a bus from Toronto to Mississauga where Ben David will introduce the “runalong”—an amorphous mental puppet that many children imagine while looking out the window of a moving vehicle. Whether a running wolf, a speedy ninja, or a majestic horse, Ben David channels this figure to create a space for communing with the creatures of our daydreams. In doing so, she draws attention to the overlooked inner lives of commuters and repositions the bus as a site for collective imagination and community consciousness. Kicking off in post-glamourous Mississauga, Boult will then perform 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘣𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘛𝘰𝘶𝘳 as Kiki, beloved persona, diva, and self-declared municipal defender. As branding wars erupt across the GTA, this public address is an urgent warning to confront cultural erasure in the wake of a housing crisis, austerity measures, and Drake’s questionable return to Canadiana, including his latest move: rebranding Mississauga’s iconic “Marilyn Monroe Towers” (a.k.a the Absolute World condos) as part of his expanding “Six” empire. This searing, satirical spectacle asks: what happens when the suburbs fight back? Together, Ben David and Boult invite audiences to consider the narratives we attach to urban spaces and the forces—both real and fantastical—that shape how we move through the city. This program is presented as a part of the lightbox exhibition, 𝘐𝘯 𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨, curated by Karie Liao. For the full itinerary, visit the Blackwood website. Free to attend; register on Eventbrite. Link in bio! Images courtesy of the artists. Image descriptions are in the comments below.
