Most of the time, the floating islands are anchored at their respective sites, each serving a specific function to enrich the waterfront experience of everyday life and functioning like checkpoints along the promenade. Occasionally, the twelve floating islands can be arranged in different compositions: a parade along harbourfront for festive celebration; a bridge across the harbour; and a civic plaza connected by temporary floating broadway outside Tamar Park for “Super March”. @detourhk 2025 #architecture #publicspace #spatialinstallation #victoriaharbour #detour

“Victoria Harbour as a Tapestry of Festive Tales” is a call to discover new perspectives to engage with water and reconnect with Victoria Harbour. Instead of designing public spaces next to the Harbour where activities are always ground-based, this project encourages activities that happen on the water. The proposal suggests twelve floating islands to reconquer Victoria Harbour as a civic space, where a collection of diverse stories could unfold across the islands, much like a woven fabric with various threads of narrative. @detourhk 2025 #architecture #publicspace #spatialinstallation #victoriaharbour #detour

Barge Garden, Hung Hom — The Barge Garden serves as both a floating garden and a ferry, transporting people across Victoria Harbour from Hung Hom Pier. Constructed on a barge, it is towed by a tugboat, reminiscent of the legendary Jumbo Kingdom. Its location in Hung Hom is a nod to the district’s shipbuilding and maritime history. The design draws inspiration from the old shipyard warehouses in Whampoa. @detourhk #architecture #publicspace #spatialinstallation #floatingisland #floatinggarden #victoriaharbour

Market, Sai Wan — Western Wholesale Market was at risk of demolition due to low occupancy. However, the plan was halted due to a conservation initiative for Victoria Harbour. Instead, the four piers in front are set to be redeveloped as the Tsukiji Outer Market. Situated next to the inactive Western Wholesale Food Market, the proposed Market aims to inherit its history by establishing a vibrant food market along the waterfront. @detourhk #architecture #publicspace #spatialinstallation #floatingisland #victoriaharbour

Stage, West Kowloon— West Kowloon spans 40 hectares of reclaimed land and has emerged as a lively cultural hub, fostering interaction, development and collaboration within the local art scene. Although outdoor performances take place throughout the Art Park, they remain constrained by the ground. A Stage that allows water performances facing the audience is proposed, promoting interaction between audiences and performers with the backdrop of Victoria Harbour. @detourhk #architecture #publicspace #spatialinstallation #eventspaces #floatingisland #victoriaharbour #westkowloonculturaldistrict

Water Palace, Kai Tak — The Water Palace is dedicated to various water sports and sea bathing next to the Kai Tak Promenade, aligning with the Government’s plan to encourage water sports development in Kai Tak and realize its goal of becoming a sport hub. Situated in the Typhoon Shelter, the Water Palace will serve as a water sports and recreational hub in Victoria Harbour. The arcade’s design references the Lung Tsun Stone Bridge and the arches found in historical buildings. @detourhk #architecture #publicspace #spatialinstallation #floatingisland #bathhouse #victoriaharbour

Water Plaza, Central — The Water Plaza surrounds the sea with a boardwalk, creating a unique outdoor exhibition space adjacent to the Central Harbourfront event space. The proposal envisions the outdoor exhibition space as a series of frames over water, where art installations can be displayed along the pathway. Acting like a floating plaza, performances, concerts and outdoor exhibitions are welcomed on its stage-like platforms. @detourhk #architecture #publicspace #spatialinstallation #floatingisland #victoriaharbour

Tribune, Tsim Sha Tsui —
The Tribune for Tsim Sha Tsui is designed as a spectator stand for watching events, performances, or movies on the water. The idea was inspired by a recent anecdote from the annual Hong Kong Film Awards, where celebrity fans rented boats to watch the red carpet ceremony and support their idols. The form and color of the Tribune echo those of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. @detourhk #architecture #publicspace #spatialinstallation #floatingisland #victoriaharbour

維多利亞港:想望之島嶼|陳思頴、卓嘉豪 @szewingchan @khccheuk 📍 GF | Marketplace 地面廣場 deTour 2025 – design festival 設計節 The Shape of Yearning 想望之器 🗓️ 日期 Date|2025.11.28 - 12.07 🕐 時間 Time|11:00 - 20:00 📍 地點 Venue|PMQ元創方 ℹ️ 詳情 Detail |detour.hk/2025 【deTour 2025|Selected Entry: Victoria Harbour as A Tapestry of Festive Tales】 Pause at this circular pavilion, and look through the small opening in the wall—what kind of Victoria Harbour do you see through that tiny frame? “Victoria Harbour as A Tapestry of Festive Tales” proposes a bold reimagination of the city: extending public space from land onto water, inviting the question - if these spaces were to return as floating islands, what kind of ‘vessel of longing’ would they form?. Architects Sze Wing Chan and Ka Ho Cheuk have cast twelve softly tinted ceramic-plaster floating islands at a 1:200 scale. Each carries the history and memory of its specific waterfront; they can float independently, connect as bridges, or assemble into a wide, open water plaza. Can our relationship with Victoria Harbour be more than just distant admiration—can we truly step inside? Shore, To Kwa Wan — Hoi Sham Island was once a novel public space in To Kwa Wan with its unique identity. Following land reclamation, it was connected to the mainland. Referencing the lost and forgotten Hoi Sham Island, monumental rocks and a sandpit are reintroduced on the Shore as a children’s playground. Given the disconnected promenade, the Shore proposes an alternative connection, akin to the river-crossing ferry in Nam Sang Wai, offering a rare panoramic view of Hoi Sham Rock. @detourhk #architecture #publicspace #playground #spatialinstallation #victoriaharbour

deTour 2025 – design festival 設計節 The Shape of Yearning 想望之器 🗓️ 日期 Date|2025.11.28 - 12.07 🕐 時間 Time|11:00 - 20:00 📍 地點 Venue|PMQ元創方 ℹ️ 詳情 Detail |detour.hk/2025 ·主辦單位 Organiser | PMQ元創方 @pmqhkdesign ·主要贊助單位 Lead Sponsor |香港特別行政區「文創產業發展處」Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region ·總策展人 Curator-at-large |黃馨 Shin Wong @theinvisiblelady ·策展人 Curator |陳濬人 Adonian Chan @adonian #detour #deTourhk #deTour2025 #TheShapeofYearning #想望之器 #DesignFestival #設計節 #pmqhk #元創方 #香港好去處 #香港設計節
