This month, KHARPP achieved a huge milestone: we completed the purchase of a house in Cherkasy Oblast, central Ukraine, for a family from Novopavlivka, a village in the far east of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, which has been decimated by russian forces. Viktoria and Yuriy evacuated their home with their five children and Viktoria’s elderly parents at the beginning of this year, and since then the nine of them have been living together in rented accommodation in southern Ukraine, far from friends, family, and opportunities for work. We are so pleased to have been able to help Viktoria and Yuriy, and their whole family. The stability that this purchase provides them will enable the children to return to school, Yuriy to find work, and for the whole family to begin the long and painful process of restarting their lives in the knowledge that they have, at least, stability in their accommodation. Yuriy built their home in Novopavlivka himself, with the intention of passing it down to his children. russia stole that possibility from him, but we hope that this new home will also become a place of safety, warmth, and security for the family. We are especially grateful to @constructionfestival and the Telegraph’s Ukraine: the Latest podcast — and in particular, David Knowles’ family — for their support of our fundraising efforts, which enabled us to reach this milestone. We remain an entirely grassroots charity, dependent on your donations to keep supporting victims of russian aggression. Please consider giving today.

At this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale, a few of the exhibitions in the national pavilions focus on the theme of security. Each approaches it differently: by reflecting on fears and real threats, mental safety, protective infrastructures, and grassroots resistance practices or ways of building resilience. The fact that these exhibitions represent countries from the same geographical region is no coincidence. On the last day of the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2025, we invite the public to take part in an event whose point of departure is the exhibitions in the Polish, Ukrainian and Latvian pavilions. The Polish Pavilion – “Lares and Penates” – focuses on the technical and cultural means through which we construct a sense of safety through architecture. “Landscape of Defense” in the Latvian Pavilion presents the defense infrastructure of NATO's external border from the perspective of residents of border areas. The Ukrainian Pavilion – “DAKH (ДАХ): Vernacular Hardcore” – explores intersections between traditional building methods and improvised constructions during times of war; as well as the necessary intersection between practices of reconstruction, displacement and resistance. The program will culminate in a short DJ set/sound performance – “Dakh Components: Hardcore Odesa Signals” – by Nikolay Karabynovych. The event is coorganized by the teams of Polish, Ukrainian and Latvian pavilions, with the support of Razom for Ukraine. ▫️Dark Clouds: Architectures of Security, Resistance and Solidarity 📍 Polish Pavilion at the International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 23.11 Sunday, 12 PM-1 PM @ukrainianpavilioninvenice @razom.for.ukraine @kharpproject @ukraineoncampus @atlas_vernacular_hardcore @bog_dana_aqua__kosmina_ukraina @kosmy_na_studio_4 @katerynarusetska @karabinovych.today @goldzamt @olakedziorek @przezwa @maciej.siuda.pracownia @lv_pavilion Photos: 1. “Lares and Penates”, the Polish Pavilion Venice, Jacopo Salvi / altomare.studio, Zachęta – National Gallery of Art archive; 2. “DAKH (ДАХ): Vernacular Hardcore”, courtesy of the Ukrainian Pavilion Venice

Fundraiser for a new home for a family from Novopavlivka. Novopavlivka is a village in eastern Dniprо region that until recently seemed distant from the war. After the intensification of the Russian offensive in Donetsk region, it turned into a frontline settlement — heavily damaged by guided aerial bombs and under constant threat from FPV drones. Some local residents decide to spend all their savings on buying houses in relatively safer regions of Ukraine. The decision to purchase is often made by those who need the most stable solutions: people with disabilities, large families, or those who own livestock and pets. Such houses cost up to €10,000 and are usually in neglected condition. Over the past months, the organization KHARPP, which has been helping restore buildings in frontline areas for more than two years, has focused on repairing exactly these kinds of homes. This assistance program is only available to those who managed to purchase at least some type of housing. Yet most people from Novopavlivka cannot afford even the cheapest property, and even in the most difficult circumstances they are forced to rent. Together with KHARPP, Construction is launching a fundraiser to relocate one family to a safer place. Our goal is to buy and repair a house for one family from Novopavlivka so they can start a new life with a sense of stability and peace. 📢 Fundraiser announcement for our #meettheneighbours event on July 20. 🇺🇦❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 We are very happy to be supporting the vital work of @kharpproject , in collaboration with @constructionfestival , to repair homes and support communities in eastern Ukraine. Tickets for "Life in Spite of Everything: Songs and Stories from Ukraine with Victoria Donovan (@monotown ) and Michael Alpert" are *FREE* (and going fast🔥 - link in bio). At the event we'll be collecting donations by cash or card for KHARPP and Construction Festival's work in Novopavlivka. Novopavlivka is a village in the east of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast that, until recently, seemed distant from the war. Following the intensification of the Russian offensive in Donetsk region, it has become a frontline settlement—already heavily damaged by guided aerial bombs and under constant threat from FPV drones. Some local residents are investing all their savings in purchasing homes in relatively safer regions of Ukraine. Often, those who make this decision are the ones most in need of stable solutions: people with disabilities, large families, and owners of farm or domestic animals. Such houses cost up to €10,000 and are usually in a neglected condition, lacking running water, heating systems, and functional bathrooms. Over the past few months, KHARPP — an organization that has been helping to repair houses in frontline areas for over two years — has focused on repairing exactly these kinds of homes. Assistance under this program is available only to those who have managed to purchase at least some form of housing on their own. Still, most people from Novopavlivka cannot afford even the cheapest property, and even in the most difficult circumstances, they are forced to rent. KHARPP and Construction festival are fundraising to purchase and renovate a home for a family from Novopavlivka, to enable them to move to a safer place. We are grateful for the opportunity to support this vital work at @cupararts .

What does it mean to create shelter, repair and rebuild under wartime conditions? The Ukraine Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale juxtaposes the collective wisdom of traditional Ukrainian village housing with the ‘emergency wisdom’ of self-organised reconstruction. Named DAKH/ДАХ: Vernacular Hardcore, the exhibition focuses on resilience and resistance, starting from the roof, Dakh in Ukrainian. Roofs offer shelter and security, but in wartime, they become the primary target for hostile projectiles. Central to the exhibition is Bogdana Kosmina’s monumental mobile structure crowned by a vernacular pointed roof crafted from straw. Visitors can find out more about traditional Ukrainian housing through a comprehensive 50-year research conducted by three generations of women architects: Tamara, Oksana, and Bogdana Kosmina. Additionally, guests can also dialogue with the AI avatar of the late architect and ethnographer, Tamara Kosmina. The exhibition showcases emergency solutions devised by architects and citizens. Reconstruction collectives Livyj Bereh and KHARPP showcase documentation on the emergency vernacular landscapes shaped by war and repair. Artist and writer Yevgenia Belorusets features a photo essay that captures war-damaged landscapes. But repair and shelter alone are insufficient. “Our message at the Biennale is that talking about architecture is not enough. Reconstruction is impossible without resistance.” Co-curator Michał Murawski told Archipanic. “Rebuilding needs security, weapons, and education. We must talk about empathy and resistance as we can’t afford to be pacifist–That is a privilege for NATO countries.” #venice #venicebiennale #biennale #venezia #venicebiennale2025 #biennalearchitettura2025 #architects #architect #architecturelovers #architecture #architectures #architecturephotography #architettura #architektur #arquitectura #architecturelover #design #architecturelovers Photos by Andrea Avezzù. @ukrainianpavilioninvenice @kharpproject @goldzamt @bog_dana_aqua__kosmina_ukraina @livyj_bereh @katerynarusetska @uchaotica @kyivpastrans.records @ribbon.international @1001doch

Thousands in London march for Ukraine, calling for peace, Russian withdrawal, and increased international support 🫂In London, a large-scale march and rally drew thousands of Ukrainians and Britons united in their call for just peace in Ukraine. Participants demanded the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from all Ukrainian territory. They advocated for increased international support, emphasizing the role of Great Britain as a strategic and valuable partner to Ukraine🤝 🗣️The demonstration took place near the Russian Embassy in London and gathered a broad coalition of Ukrainian and British organizations, politicians, trade unions, and public activists who once again confirmed their support for Ukraine. Among the participants were British Parliament members Emily Thornberry, John McDonnell, Jo Stevens, and Neil Coyle✨ 📝The organizers of the action were the British organizations Campaign for Ukraine @campaignforukraine , Ukraine Solidarity Campaign @ukraine_solidarity_campaign , Vsesvit @vsesvit.uk , the charitable organization KHARPP @kharpproject , Ukrainian student communities, and British trade union organizations – GMB, ASLEF, PCS, UCU, UNISON, and NUM. The participants‘ main demands were clear: ▪️No division of Ukraine: Peace must not come at the cost of territorial concessions. ▪️Complete withdrawal of Russian troops: Ukrainians should determine their own future, free from occupation. ▪️Increased military aid to Ukraine: Essential for bolstering defense capabilities and ensuring equitable negotiations. A special emphasis was placed on the presidential initiative «Bring Kids Back,» which sought to highlight the plight of over 20,000 Ukrainian children deported to Russia. Participants called for their immediate return and underscored the global responsibility to fight for every abducted child. 🎈Representatives from the Ukrainian organization War Diaries Children also attended the rally, bearing posters with significant messages. They carried hundreds of balloons, symbolizing the Ukrainian children affected by the war — children who this war should have never touched. 📷 Oleksandr Smutko
