BROTHAS VALENTINES DAY SPECIAL EDITION (Wordless cover: can be used as FINE art) spray paint on cradled board FEB 2026 36x48 38x50 framed Available @gallery_440 The transition from the “move mountains” devotion of the 90s to today’s cynical landscape reflects a profound cultural shift, moving away from a time when men—myself in cluded—would sacrifice everything for the sake of a romantic pursuit. During my college years, I was so “in love with the thought of being in love” that I pawned my most precious possessions, including my class ring, my saxophone, and the very coat off my back, just for the chance to be with a pen pal in another country. While that era of R&B, defined by the soulful devotion of artists like Boyz II Men and Babyface, championed such grand sacrifices, modern music has largely traded that “fairytale” sentiment for a “toxic” realism. This evolution, fueled by Hip-Hop’s influence and a “vibe-centric” culture of disposability, has replaced the art of long-term courtship with emotional unavailability and a “hustle” mentality. It is my hope that this painting sparks conversations and the realization that ultimately, as the genre shifts toward moody, solitary listening and shorter attention spans, many African American men seem to have forgotten the virtue of sacrifice for love’s sake, leaving the “gentleman” persona behind in favor of a harsher, more transactional reality. If we can learn to pursue money, perhaps we can learn to genuinely pursue love again. Maybe we can learn to replace flexing and hustle culture with romance and cultural responsibility again.
