Zelenskyy has spoken with more compassion, led with more courage, and exemplified greater integrity, convinction, grace, and unwavering will than the Biden Administration and all of the U.S. Congress combined.
If we’re to be the “leader of the free world,” perhaps we could fucking act like it. Or act at all, instead of wagging a finger at an aggressor and telling him there will be consequences if he escalates violence. Escalate to what? Targeting residential areas? Destroying hospitals? Murdering civilians, including children and pregnant women? Displacing millions and inflicting trauma that will affect them for generations? What must Putin do to meet the requirements of “escalation”? War crimes and crimes against humanity are evidently insufficient. But if the children dying were NATO children… well, *that* would be unacceptable and demand intervention. Until then, we will watch Ukrainians die and tell Zelenskyy that a no-fly zone over his own country is not an option, because that would put NATO members at risk and escalate into a war. If not war, what the fuck exactly do we think is happening in Ukraine? Or are we afraid of Putin doing what we did, and that we will be unseated as the only country ever to have used nuclear weapons in war, much less on civilian targets?
We’re not afraid. We’re apathetic fucking cowards. I am heartbroken and utterly ashamed of my country. We must do better.
A silver lining of spending all day in the hospital basement is that the view that greets me as I walk outside after work is all the more awe inspiring. There is beauty even amidst times shrouded in darkness.
