In 1994, photographer @kevin_hatt invited 22-year-old @chloessevigny to his studio for a portrait.
Neither of them could anticipate how her upcoming role in Larry Clarkâs generation-defining film Kids would launch her acting career and cement her status as a downtown fashion it girl.
Known for his studio portraiture and publisher of photo journal Kit and Caboodle, Sevigny reached out to Hatt and suggested a date for them to shoot with her then-boyfriend, Kids screenwriter and co-star Harmony Korine.
Published by Dashwood Books nearly 30 years after the pictures were taken, ChloĂŤ and Harmony â94 marks the first time all portraits are shown together in one publication. Upon the zineâs release, Kevin Hatt speaks about meeting ChloĂŤ and Harmony, New Yorkâs downtown scene, Dashwood Books, and the undeniable cultural impact of Kids.

Iâm dressed in my thrift store version of Helmut Lang, a boys Brooks Brothers blazer, fuchsia lace skirt, white tights and I bet some little pumps you unfortunately canât see.

Monday afternoon Tea Dance was happening here today and Sylvesterâs hit song âyou make me feelâ was playing! As music does, it can take you back to a time and place in an instant. I was taken back to Vancouver in 1980 dancing at The Gandy Dancer, Vancouvers best gay club. âYouuuu make me feelâ was blasting to a sea of sweaty half dressed men dancing like there was no tomorrow and right in the middle of it all was my friend Fernando flashing his trade mark handsome smile. I can still see him dancing and having so much fun. Itâs a wonderful memory!!
Fernando had great style, he wore Armani with perfectly worn in 501âs and drove a jeep!! Fernando left us way too early but like the music, these photos remind me of the Fernando and the great times we had.
I shot these photos of Fernando with my old Speed Graphic 4x5 camera on type 55 Polaroid film with negative.
PS I know, I donât have a photo of Fernando smiling I was in my German expressionistic phase ⌠ha!
