Through The Roof @hermitude & @elefanttraks First gig I did as a newly recruited live action director with homegrown creative powerhouse @oh_yeah_wow , in which a sad lad in the back of the best car ever discovers fantastical beings living in smoke and burning rubber. Nominated for an ARIA (Australia’s version of the Grammys) for Best Music Video, feat real life burnout star Lisa Howie and her teal blue steed BRN RBA, a lot of extras and some of the most patient dancers known to filmkind. And if there’s one thing I learned, it was that working with clever but brutally honest VFX artists is a must. @gorstenbortst & @joshthomas483 went to the nth degree to make the VFX shots feel as photorealistic as possible, while making sure I knew how much I was asking when I said things like “can we use the smoke plate as a matte to simulate light passing over these highlights?” long after they thought the shot was done. Good lads.

Shot in one day in my childhood park with best bud Josh Mckie, this was one of the last gigs I did before teaming up with Oh Yeah Wow, who were my Wishlist dream production company. Gross things and ambitious technicalities seemed to resonate. And if there’s one thing I learned, it’s that always encourage your DP to shoot B roll. My favourite shot in this whole music video was shot by Josh during a reset as he walked the Steadicam back to first position.

The Bombay Royale ‘Henna’ 
A Bollywood-inspired spy-ploitation riff for @thebombayroyale in which The Lady (@parvynmusic ) and her crack team must rid the dastardly Skipper of the key to his secret lair — and rescue the Tiger! But how? And neat or on the rocks? A colourful and sun drenched bit of silliness filled with a huge cast of characters shot across a small collection of long hours in a hot derelict plane at an old air museum on a piece of dry bush in Victoria. Music videos ask a lot of all involved. This one remains a crowd favourite and all thanks to the star wattage of the band (I mean just look at them). Also the continuing of a great stint of support from Method Studios where I got to work with some real heroes of their craft right as they were starting out. And if I learned one thing on this one, it’s that when you want a live action shot to move into a fully CGI shot, don’t move the camera unless it’s really fast or really necessary. The pan off the heroes in the ocean just about broke Michael Shanks, and he can do anything. Even more so after that one. Hermitude The Villain The Villain is the first of two music videos I made for Hermitude in my years, and the beginning of one of my longest partnerships with a record label, @elefanttraks . In the Villain I got to channel my love of dance (I can’t especially, but I love anyone who can), turning what was a pretty simple idea (a dance footchase) into a parable about how greed and opportunism can make everyone forget why they’re there. Don’t you forget it! If there’s one thing I learnt, it’s that having a producer is always a good thing. Producing it on my own, and being an as-yet-undiagnosed ADHD Inattentive Type, my ability to corral and organise disparate talent off set was lacking. I ended up with about five minutes to plan the choreography with a very gorgeous and talented bunch of brilliant humans. Get a person who’s good with time. Pay em what they need. It’s never a not a good idea.
