The entertainment industry often opts for remakes, knock-offs and plays within a safe predictable box to minimize risk and capitalize on familiar formulas. As a producer sometimes staying within the box is what keeps the lights on, but there is nothing more rewarding than when a wholly original idea comes your way. Thatâs âDad Jokesâ.
When Mo and Dan pitched me the idea of Mo journeying to Central Illinois to reconnect with her estranged father, and capturing their reunion in real time I was instantly hooked. The twist? Mo aimed to use this genuine encounter as the foundation for her own version of the ultimate Dad Joke.
We were electrified by the concept but clueless about its formâwas it a documentary, a comedy special, or a blend of both? Nonetheless, we charged ahead, propelled by the sheer desire to bring this vision to life, confident that the details would fall into place.
As the shoot approached, worries surfaced about past issues, ethics, and audience reception. Still, driven by Moâs quest for control over her life and creativity, âDad Jokesâ evolved into a universally relatable project, capturing the courage of facing oneâs past.
Amidst the depth, there are laughs aplenty. âDad Jokesâ encapsulates Moâs humorâside-splitting, entirely original, and boldly courageous. Finally, we can openly discuss and share this special with as many people as possible, a milestone that wouldnât have been achievable without our fearless leaders
