I've been absent on socials for quite some time now. I was sharing more content than I made, using it as a way to give my brian a dopamine fix. It is still the way I felt most connected to the wider world and to my wider community, including the queer community, in which is still feeling so new.
But since Meta's recent policy changes to allow hate speech to be used against LGBTQIA+ folks and various other humanitarian back steps, I have decided I'm done.
Words mean a lot to me. I have built a life, a body of work and an identity out of them at various time. I cannot remain in a space where words are being consciously weaponised and all defenses stripped. So, I'm abandoning these accounts for the foreseeable, with the aim to delete them entirely by year's end.
I'm not naive. I am aware how intricately these platforms and corporations have woven themselves into our lives. I know that I am not perfect and will still be using messaging services owned by Meta, because right now that's where all my real life connections lie.
But I won't be giving them my creativity, my personality or my free time and energy any more.
To all the wonderful folks who I have met and maintained relationships with on these platforms: it's been a joy and I am grateful for every one of you. I hope for some of us we can find ways to stay connected outside of these hate-welcoming spaces. For those of us who don't, I wish you peace on your onward journey.
Finally, I want to acknowledge the privilege I have in being able to step away like this. I know many who want to but who, for reasons of capacity, business, community and reputation, are unable to at this time. Please know, I'm not judging.
When we risk losing our only connection to income or community... how do we leave?
But, if you have the space, privilege or capacity to do so, I invite you to also ponder this:
When these big platforms open the gate for explicit hate speech against the human you are, the humans you support, and the humans you love... how do we stay?

To me you are ink printed hieroglyphs on
a page of damp paper and yet,
I know I love you.
To me you are the sound of the song
of your name, flying over a patient crowd
full of weighted breath.
To me you are shining phosphor on a sea
of queer community, eddied together in
a pool of remembering.
I wish you were still a body instead,
splashing with us, full but salt-scrubbed, and entirely unremarkable in your aliveness.
For your sake,
I wish I'd never heard your name at all.
