Our COO, @julietterichey , had a blast last week at the Moonshot Film Challenge with Founder @katrinamedoff and @hudsytv at @rosendaletheatre ! She got to watch five short films during the event, all made by crews of all women and gender-expansive people: A Nice Place to Visit, Life Begins, New World Orioles, Out of Time, and The Swipe. While there, Juliette learned about an exciting opportunity by @moonshotinitiative that we had to share. ⬇️ Applications for the Moonshot Pilot Accelerator are open now through May 27, 2026! In this highly competitive virtual accelerator program for TV writers, 6-8 fellows will receive three weeks of pitch training and industry workshops, and then have the opportunity to pitch one-on-one to Netflix, HBO, and many other studios, production companies, agents and managers. 📝 Alums have sold a show to a production company, signed with an agent, and gotten hired in a writers' room from these meetings. 🎬 This program aims to increase the representation of women and gender-expansive people on screen and in writers’ rooms. They’ll be well-prepared for Pitch Week, because they’ll first receive 3 weeks of pitch training and industry workshops! Come with us to make 5 short films simultaneously, from kickoff to premiere! 🎬 Kickoff Party: Crews met for a casual hang with their teammates — all previously strangers that we vetted and placed onto 5 crews! 🎬 Writer/Director Orientation: A practice run for our creative teams’ collaborative process! 🎬 Pre-Production Meeting: Orientation for all 150 participants, and then breaking out into 5 crews for pre-production meetings! Thanks to @broadwaystages 🎬 Genre Reveal: We pulled a different genre out of a hat for each team! The genres were sci-fi/dystopian, time travel, fairy tale, horror, and crime caper/heist. 🎬 Equipment Pickups: Our crews picked up their equipment, generously donated by @hudsytv @abelcine @gothamsound @cinelease @luxlighting @lightbulb_rentals and thanks to @rollinstudios.official for helping with production insurance! 🎬 Filming (Friday and Saturday): We filmed across NYC! Tonight’s the night!! We’re premiering the 5 short films we produced for the @moonshotinitiative Film Challenge at the beautiful @svatheatre ! We got hundreds of applications, selected 166 participants, and put together 5 crews of all strangers to write, shoot, and edit a short film with cinema-quality gear provided by our sponsors. We’re taking you behind the scenes for all the ups and downs of this year’s Moonshot Film Challenge! Welcome to Episode 1 of our new series, From Page to Production 🎬✨ When we held our first challenge (then called Women’s Weekend Film Challenge) back in 2018, just 4% of major films hired a woman director*. By 2024, we’ve seen a HUGEEEEEE improvement … to 14% 🤦🏼‍♀️ That’s right — we’re still a long ways away from 50%, so we have a LOT of work to do. That’s why it’s such a rarity to see sets like ours filled with women and gender-expansive filmmakers. We want to show you what we can make with 150 complete strangers, all on a mission to change the film industry. And you can bet there’s no shortage of on-set drama, from losing a location last minute to a power outage on set. We’re Moonshot Initiative, a nonprofit that works toward gender equity in the film and TV industry! Our founders @sayretracy and @katrinamedoff launched Moonshot (formerly Women’s Weekend Film Challenge) almost 8 years ago because they were sick of being the only women on set and they knew there were TONS of talented women and gender expansive folks in the industry who just needed to meet each other!
