I rarely get to design for myself so this was a fun piece to make. Working in my studio I need to be very comfortable so the base had to be a loose-fitting lightweight "lab coat" type layer. Then I added a vest with a giant hood to deal with Seattle's manic Juneuary weather. That little bit of structure and silhouette transformed the look so much. Minimal and dramatic. Design joy. I’ve got a few bespoke jackets coming up so I decided to start digitizing my patterning process. Super cool getting to combine my past life as a graphic designer and current love of bespoke tailoring! I definitely miss getting to draft shapes with my French curves but this feels like a good direction. Jury’s out on how much faster this will be vs patterning on paper but if I can get a projector set up this will save a ton of paper and time. It’s been a while, friends! Anyone else still processing and recovering from 2025? What a year. Really grateful for creative outlets and every time we got to see or talk to one another in person. My first project of 2026 were these fiber optic ballet costume prototypes for @fever_us Sleeping Beauty. They were tested this past weekend in Seattle and Portland. In addition to designing for the characters, the pieces need to be washable and size inclusive while maintaining a tailored silhouette. Big thanks to @skylar_burks for such a fun project and support throughout the process! The Prince top is a “jacket” where the sleeves are attached to a stretchy under layer for maximum mobility. This is my first male ballet bodice. I fell in love with luxurious drape of this non-stretch 100% cotton velvet and wanted to try spandex side seams. Not for the faint of heart but oh so satisfying to execute. I went deep into the matrix for this one and have so much appreciation for ballet construction. Form truly meets function. I didn’t make the underlayer from scratch because technical knits are a whole thing and I had enough new things to get right. Aurora (pink) was inspired by a photo I found of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty from 1890. Apparently I make corsets now?! I love that shape so much. This is actually the 2nd iteration of the prototype to accommodate partnering. Testing your garment is crucial! I wish I captured process photos of Carabosse (green). This costume was designed by me and beautifully built by Lillie Steele @lillie_sigrid_ (hand sewing) and Mariana Amorine (machine sewing). She’s been tested in 8 shows now and delivers magic every time. Killer threads forged by daggers. 🗡️

Matching print across seams and a perfect fit are a tailor’s pride! My sweet client picked out the design and fabrics. Rather than use fusible interfacing like the pattern called for, I flat-lined each piece to provide structure. Because there’s no glue, the garment will last longer. It's all fairly new in the PNW that Filipinos are celebrating our culture. I went to J.O. (the school where the festival was happening) and while there's a main road, it's a residential neighborhood. It's just hard to imagine something like this happening there. My heart goes out to the victims, their loved ones, our community. ❤️🇵🇭❤️

Last year I taught a costume class at @pathwithart and it was one of my most memorable experiences in 2024. I learned so much and loved being in this period of collective inspiration with the talented artists at PwA and our incredible models who absolutely nailed celestial royalty, Shari and Sharon.
