Composed of woven textiles, the exhibition translates texts into textiles to examine the properties that make text recognisable as text. In Astala’s woven artist’s book, the visual characteristics of text, such as lines, columns, and grids, are translated into woven structures, and readable text gradually transforms into texture. The exhibition, composed of woven works, turns texts into textiles and reflects on what makes text appear as text. The text is one of the six texts selected through our open call. niko wearden is a British Performance Artist who lives in Helsinki now. Currently niko is concerned with ocean devastation, the rights of children, waiting and the weather. Their text is about windows for a window , about windows , waiting and weather. #nikowearden Katri Astala is a graphic designer specialising in organizing, concepts and typography. In this design, the calmness of the soft forms of the typeface and the conventional justification of the column are disturbed by the exaggerated indents and spaces around the commas. In her work, she particularly examines agency and the “bursting” of everyday life. This text is a declaration: for a month, Eurantie belongs to girls! @sandyclit Katri Astala is a graphic designer specialising in organizing, concepts and typography. ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS eli Chris Gylee ja Aslan ovat jakaneet elämänsä ja tehneet taidetta yhdessä jo lähes 16 vuoden ajan. Vuonna 2023 he muuttivat Berliinistä Outokumpuun ja loivat kodin sinne. He kertovat tarinoita queer-elämästä ja queer-tulevaisuuksista maaseudulla käyttäen tieteisfiktion keinoja, ja taiteellisena työkaluna on usein heidän kehittämänsä queer-kieli damiá. @oncewewereislands Katri Astala on graafinen suunnittelija, jonka erityisosaamista ovat järjestely, konseptointi ja tekstin muotoilu. It is written by ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS and designed by Katri Astala. The text is on view from 4 December to 28 January, 2026.  ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS is Chris Gylee and Aslan and they have been living their lives together and making art together for almost 16 years now. In 2023, they moved from Berlin and made a new home in Outokumpu in North Karelia. They tell stories about Queer lives and Queer futures in rurality through a science-fiction lens, often using the Queer constructed language Damiá as an artistic tool. @oncewewereislands Katri Astala is a graphic designer specialising in organizing, concepts and typography. The text is set to flow from one side of the window to the other. @katrias The text is presented in the Damiá script, tolpata. The typefaces used are Damiá Agate and Mana.  An English translation of the text can be found via the QR code in the window. This translation was done by ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS. On se kone! (eng. What a machine!) is the new permanent exhibition of Sarka – The Finnish Museum of Agriculture. The exhibition tells the story of the mechanization of Finnish agriculture and its social impact from the early 20th century to the present day, featuring machinery related to agricultural work, such as tractors from different decades. 🚜 I designed the visual identity and exhibition graphics, working closely with @anttiauvinen who did the exhibition architecture. The visual identity and material choices were inspired by farms and machines themselves: shiny tractors and their logos, raw building materials and dusty surfaces. Photos: @linaltosetla

Book design for the novel Tuhatkaunokin tuho (2024) by Jaakko Yli-Juonikas, published by @siltalakustannus . The book has 540 pages and combines different texts and documents into an A4-sized block. The layout was designed together with the author. As an object the book is thread-bound, but it has no actual covers, so we added the cover image as a sticker on the cover page.

Visual identity, illustrations and web design for Uumen (2022). Uumen @uumen.art was an online media for texts by visual artists in 2021-2024. The Finnish word uumen roughly translates to "depths", something that is deep within.
