Becoming a mother has been the greatest joy of my life.
And becoming a working mother has stretched me in ways I never could have imagined.
This little girl has grown up in the atelier—in fittings, fabric meetings, late nights, and quiet mornings before everyone arrives. She took her first naps surrounded by silk and lace. She took her first steps between the pattern tables. I was back in the atelier with her, breastfeeding between emergencies because when you build a business from the ground up, there is no real maternity leave. I weaned her during Bridal Market while my own mother patiently taught her to take a bottle in a hotel room.
There were moments I deeply resented my business for needing me (my first baby, really) when all I wanted was to immerse myself entirely in motherhood. And there were moments I felt profoundly grateful for it, for giving me purpose, identity, and somewhere to place my mind when postpartum felt overwhelming and all-consuming.
Motherhood has made me softer in some ways and infinitely stronger in others. It has made me a better leader, a more compassionate employer, and a more present human being. It has also forced me to confront the guilt so many women carry—the feeling that somehow we are always being pulled away from where we “should” be.
But what I hope she sees one day is this:
That it was never one or the other. That women are allowed to love their children fiercely and still love their work. That building a family and building a dream can exist side by side, even when it’s imperfect. That her mother showed up for both the best she could.
Sometimes I worry about raising Viv in a workshop. But more often, I feel incredibly proud that she has a front-row seat to watching her mother create something she loves with her own hands. I hope that years from now, I get to watch her find her own path with the same conviction and joy.
