When I wrote this poem, I didn’t know that “hugging your mom” would become such a distant feeling. Many thanks to the editorial team at @porterhousereview for housing “Relations” / link to full poem in bio 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱🌱 #poems #poetry #happymothersday #poem #relations #allofmyrelations

River Kelly-Torres November 2014-February 28, 2026 Kind. Beautiful. Wild spirit. Found playing on the Little Wound Elementary playground in March 2015, River would spend the next eleven years of her life escaping to other playgrounds or bodies of water. An adventurous and loving sibling to her late brother Tucker, she is survived by sister Sable and cousins Jax, Adobe, Luna, and many other friends. She was a friend to all (except for one dog she met in 2018 at Upper Walnut Creek park—and you know what? Fuck that dog). In recent years, River enjoyed chasing squirrels, chewing on sticks, and watching children coming and going from Leon Heights Elementary. She never once replied to an email, used AI to write an essay, or considered buying a smart phone. She was the best of us. Her last meal was an Arby’s beef n cheddar sandwich consumed in three bites near a playground in Belton, TX. Children played on swings and rode bikes around her while she licked her last curly fry. As River’s spirit journeys on, you may hear “Rio” by Duran Duran and think of her on a beach somewhere, trotting around, ears bouncing in unison. 🐾 #riverdog #dogsofinstagram #overtherainbowbridge🌈 #dogs #pups
