A year ago I sat at my favorite cafe near my sister’s. There was a group of about 12 firefighters grabbing lunch, remembering what today was. And the owner came out and bought each of them a round on the house.
Kindness, support and understanding.
Why do I love New York? The New Yorkers. Resilient, sassy, kind and yet tough. They always show up.
Today and always I am so grateful for each of them - the family, strangers, and strangers who become friends and then family. And I’m so sorry if I missed seeing you on this trip. I’ll be back soon. 💕
My Aunt Kathi taught me the magic of showing up for your family - extended, found, of different generations and from all over. She took me to my first broadway shows, loved me and my sister as if we were her grandkids, and made visits to Queens during the summer and Christmas feel like magical adventures. And always encouraged me to believe in myself and others even in my most awkward phases.
Families and grief are so complicated this time of year, but whether your chosen are found, given or forged I hope we all find time to hug each other extra.
And as Aunt Kathi said as she wished us goodnight: “Dream of the Angels.” ❤️
I have so many people to thank for honoring my birthday, but here are some of the highlights from #buffy prom night.
The custom Bronze sign, the schemes of Demery, Jonathan and my whole family. My sister’s cheeseboard, the unhinged photoshop genius of @zaquerie , my father dancing to Mr. postman and giving me letters from my friends and family across the country. My mom for everything, always. Max’s epic twin peaks / David lynch tribute rap, friends knowing the assignment and looking fabulous.
And a DV tape video I need to edit of the fabulous band SHILL covering my favorite pop punk songs.
Thank you everyone who made it special near and far and feeling so loved.
Lately I’ve been traveling a lot again, going to lots of weddings, seeing friends shows, wanting a dog plus frequenting and romanticizing wine bars, getting visited by so many great folks and being silly with all the pals and ya know just feeling grateful likely to post a part 2 so let’s call part 1
There were scooters, there was laughter, there were early mornings and late nights, there were kittens stuck in trucks, way too much chicken pot pie, and there was a really lovely movie with fantastic humans. I can rant about how magical all of you were but just want to thank you all for having me along for the ride. What collaborative forces of nature, each of you! 💕💕💕
I love Jonathan, the loveliest and most giving partner, and I love our new home and I love my mom with flowers flying in for my wisdom tooth surgery and I love taking care of myself and all that dental work and I love nature and the friends who want to spend time in it with me and I love tarot cards and I love Chloe and how she loves them as much as I do and I love my younger self and all the mistakes that taught her so much and I love make your art no matter what by Beth Pickens and I love Nick Cave sound suits I love dressing up for Halloween as a witch or a vampire hunter and I love Demery and her cooking and her knowledge of flowers. I love friends who pick up with you right where you left off who I need more pictures of and never enough time with. I love my family, their support and their unconditional love. I love seeing where everyone is going and succeeding and sharing and being. I love love and love you all and want to celebrate love everyday in all it’s wonder.
MUCH
murmurations of memories
much too much of the love
hugs that waited two years
still
much cancelled plans due to positive negatives
triggered glances at a masked sneeze
and a pasta sister you can no longer call.
The sum does not equal
all the fracked parts flooding over into
the steps on deeply trodden cement
my grandmother walked
my grandmother’s grandmother walked
sometimes that’s what makes you cry on the Brooklyn bridge
othertimes it is missing pieces of the skyline;
now its the clear skies, a breeze
for in the leaves a starling stirs
and now together is is easier to be.
