Composers Rashaan Allwood and Kalaisan Kalaichelvan are the recipients of this year’s Kathleen McMorrow Music Award presented by the Ontario Arts Foundation. The award recognizes the composition and presentation of contemporary classical music by Ontario composers. Two awards are made annually to applicants from an anonymous jury taken from applicants of the Ontario Arts Council Music Creation Projects program application deadlines.
Rashaan Allwood is being awarded for his new work “Black Ice” commissioned for piano and nine instruments, and is set to premiere in February 2025 with New Music Concerts in Toronto.
Kalaisan Kalaichelvan is receiving his award for a commissioned project for chamber orchestra entitled “C’est Pas Beau?”. Commissioned by the Glenn Gould School New Music Ensemble, the project will have its world premiere at the Royal Conservatory’s 21C Music Festival in January 2025.
GOLCONDA, came out of a desire to articulate a relationship between place and self. The EP dwells on the futility of human endeavour, what we leave behind and how these spaces and artifacts lose and gain meaning over time. Drawing from the ruins of its namesake, it seeks to look at the recurring cycles of desire and disappointment and the way they are made manifest across the deep, old corners of the world. But more importantly, it felt like a good excuse to gather cool music people and make things that we obsess about.
