Work in Review: Ethel Magazine Collection One Print Edition
-
It seems like not that long ago that
@allisonantram and I were sitting in the newsroom of our college newspaper promising that one day we’d work on a publication of our own one day. So when Allison and
@ashleyccastorena came up with a concept for a publication and asked me to help set the visuals for what would eventually become Ethel Magazine, I was immediately on board. Named after Allison’s great, great aunt, Ethel Magazine is a platform and creative project fueled by a desire to express purposeful, well-rounded femininity, and to explore the perspective and brilliance of women so we can all better understand and embrace our world.

There is more to share about the overall brand and digital presence, but the print edition stands out as a core encapsulation of Ethel. After the digital launch in October, we started developing the print edition to give even more personality and visual exploration to each piece. What resulted was a 48-page, newsprint zine in a compact yet readable size.

As I sit here a few months removed, I can look at this document with fresh eyes. My perfectionistic self can still see all the things I would change on a second go around. But did the final product result in what it needed to be to let the voices within it sing together? Yes. It has a beauty, personality, warmth, and structure all its own. I think Ethel could be proud of that. I can be proud of that.

Thank you to Allison and Ashley for bringing me into the project, the writers+illustrators for their wonderful pieces,
@madelinemullenbach and
@kategrounds for their photography (cannot be overstated), and all those who have purchased a print edition.
