I am proud to share a second set of frame-grabs from Outdoor School: These images are pulled from the “Urban” portion of the film which is focused on Vin’s family, school, and difficult living environment. This story has hope, but also, harshness. The lenses and camera work didn’t need to further increase an already strenuous story - if anything the images needed a steady softness to get to the humanity. An emotional state where the viewer “feels” connected to the characters while also feeling the light from the windows, and overhead lamp, a soft flare, a reflection… - shot with Masterbuilt Softflares; a modern set of fast lenses with center sharpness and soft-ish edges. They have wonderful highlight roll-off and very pleasing highlight bloom. Not to mention and pleasing skin tones. And I love the flare characteristics…
A tree can be a home and a forest can be a school, but raised in the wilds of 90’s Portland, Vin must first learn to be a child - A transformative true story

On a run of incredible festivals (with more to come) [not to mention AWARDS] - I am thrilled to share some frame-grabs from the movie Outdoor School.
When I read the script there were two clear “worlds” - one urban and one in nature at a camp called Outdoor School. In each, the protagonist (a young boy named Vin), has differing experiences.
Writer/Director Ime N. Etuk was excited by my proposal to use a different set of lenses for each world. Here you see frame-grabs from the “nature” world where we used B-Tuned Tribe 7s which emotionally matched Vin’s journey: increased focus roll off, colorful eyelash flare, low contrast, and what some describe as their “musical fidelity”. A perfect emotional match…
I love how Ime describes the film: “…audiences say they feel like they are there. It’s not pretty, but it’s appropriately beautiful”
