Maternity leave has surprised me in the sweetest way 💐 I picked up hand embroidery during baby naps, often with my little one sleeping in the carrier. It’s not illustration, but it feels close — creative, calming, and something I can easily put down and come back to later. I love that it fits into this season so naturally. Went back to my traditional medium and though I’m a bit out of practice, nothing can beat the feeling of the brush strokes and the softness and control of colored pencils… it’s so “grounding” 🥹 This little birdwatcher duck, inspired by our walk on the weekend, came to life with watercolors and pencils, and I refined and added details on my iPad to bring it all together. The other night, my son lost his first baby tooth, and we started talking about the tooth fairy. He asked, “What’s the tooth fairy called in Spanish?” So I told him that instead of the tooth Fairy, it is “El ratoncito Pérez” (“Perez mouse”) who comes for kid’s fallen teeth (in lots of Spanish-speaking countries) and leaves some money. That led to a million questions, but the last one was: “What if they fight over the tooth?” Not wanting to create drama between these two magical beings, I told him, “since you speak both english and español, they both come and work together to collect your tooth.” He loved it, and honestly, so did I. Here’s the thing—my parents were practical, I didn’t grow up with these imaginary beings. No Pérez, nor tooth fairy, no Santa. But now that I have my own kids, I LOVE the concept of adding a little magic to their childhood, even if it means continuing these white lies. (If you ever read this, I’m so sorry, hijito, for lying to you, but I promise it’s all out of love!) That little moment inspired this illustration—a blend of traditions and a bit of whimsy to make childhood extra special. (I did show my kids this illustration and told them I caught a glimpse of them that night but I wasn’t quick enough for a photo so I had to draw it. Now my youngest says he can’t wait for his teeth to come out 😂) Do you share little white lies like these with your kids?!
