Coach Jaylend Jones is a two-time Top 100 Most Influential West Coast Grassroots Director of the Year, widely respected for his impact on youth basketball and player development.
With basketball deeply embedded in his life—his step father having played professionally—the game has been a constant presence and guiding force throughout Jaylend’s life.
Jaylend brings four years of elite club coaching experience founding top 50 NXT Pro program Sunset Select and three years of dedicated player development, having worked closely under renowned trainer Jordan Lawley. Those years shaped his philosophy: disciplined, detail-oriented, and relentlessly competitive, while never losing sight of personal growth.
Known for his hard-nosed, old-school coaching style, Coach Jones demands excellence and accountability from every athlete he leads. His practices are intense, his standards are uncompromising, and his approach pushes players beyond their perceived limits. At the same time, he is deeply invested in character development—instilling toughness, discipline, confidence, leadership, and resilience that extend far beyond the court.
Jaylend is excited to continue growing Magic Select into a premier destination in club basketball, building programs that don’t just win games, but develop complete athletes prepared for the next level in basketball and in life.
Becoming a father is one of the most humbling, surreal, life changing experiences. You want them to grow but then you want them to stay still for ever. For the past two years, I’ve watched my whole shift in ways I couldn’t imagine. But the fire inside me that you’ve created is the only gift from you that I’ll ever want. I made a decision a year ago. That decision was to disrupt the club space. To make something that puts the kids first, and the politics and media last. To focus on driving the kids to their breaking point and being uncomfortable to get to a place they never thought they could go. The vision was unclear at times, everyone questioned my program, integrity, and my morals along the way. Through it all, the experience and failures along the way will only help us continue to grow in the future. To have 4 teams all finish in the top 150, two of those teams finishing top 50 in one of the best circuits in the world in year 1 speaks measures to where this club will go. Year 1 in the books, stay tuned for year 2, we’re making our mark! @sunsetselecthoops
The business I’m in doesn’t result in instant gratification. You gotta be wired differently to want success for others before you want success for yourself. In due time, it’ll all come to fruition.
