ā€œDonnellan leads, probes, questions, pushes, drilling into the fundamental skills of the craft,ā€ Declan Donnellan is author of celebrated book, The Actor and the Target. ACTING observes him and Nick Ormerod, co-Artistic Director of their theatre company, @wearecheekbyjowl conduct an elaborate masterclass. The text is Macbeth, the Scottish play, and the film was shot in a derelict mansion on the outskirts of London. I would like to make the point that Declan is also wickedly funny, wry and refreshingly un-censored… so that’s your ā€˜trigger warning’. All families are mad…not least the Canavans. A drama comedy with a twist set in the wild West of Ireland. When Colm, the head of the family, dies, there are few who mourn his passing, not even his four estranged adult children. But the legalities of his will must be observed and more than one Canavan sibling is harbouring secrets. As the Canavans return to the family home, the fate of the family unit, their sanity and the Canavan estate all hang in the balance. Coming soon to North America! Visit to find a cinema screening near you.

In a derelict Gothic mansion on the outskirts of London, eight actors – four Macbeths and four Lady Macbeths – rehearse for eleven days with renowned directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod of Cheek By Jowl. Working in pairs, they investigate key scenes and soliloquies from Shakespeare’s Scottish tragedy. A strictly observational documentary, this film is not about the play. It’s about being offered a different position from which to view acting and theatre – of seeing text newly animated in ways more subtle, surprising, revelatory and various than even the most dedicated theatre-goers might have considered possible.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK ACTING If you've ever dreamed of interpreting the immortal words of the Bard while treading the boards, filmmaker Sophie Fiennes' observational documentary ACTINGĀ is a must-watch. Essentially a master class in Shakespearean acting, it follows the accomplished directors and talented acting ensemble of the acclaimed theatre company Cheek by Jowl as they rehearse scenes from MACBETH amid the gothic ruins of abandonned Twyford Abbey.
