This addition and remodel to a former horse stable at Ocean Beach in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset was a dreamy neighborhood collaboration. As excited as we are to see it finished, we’re already missing the fun process with a great client and team. Here’s to more like this.

Wood screen, Dolores Heights house. A screen composed of vertical wood louvers tracks vertically along one edge of the home’s 5-story staircase. Separating the public stair from various semi-public spaces as it ascends, the louvers ‘twist’ in three dimensions to generate a porous composition of ‘rips’ and ‘tears’ for light and view. Four repeated shapes create a simple kit of parts from which the composition is derived. The screen was studied digitally in three dimensions, followed by full scale foam prototypes generated with a wire cutter and 2D cardboard templates. The final CNC-milled parts are finally starting to arrive, and we’re super excited to start seeing it all finally come together. Very lucky to be working with the talented @lukbar from the storied @woodshop to make this 3D dream a reality.
