Grieving, shedding, beginning.
I’ve really been struggling with my role as a DJ lately, because the deeper I dive into liberation work, the further disconnected I feel from the nightlife world.
There’s been a myriad of issues with the nightlife scene, ranging from the rise of influencer DJs, shorter attention spans, and appropriation, but most importantly, the lack of safety.
There’s been a blatant lack of any mention of P
@lest1ne in the underground community, which gives a lot of lip service to “being a place of resistance”. And even the few promoters and DJs that are “Pro P
@lest1ne ” keep their social medias just vague enough so that it doesn’t get in the way of their individualistic ambitious.
Meanwhile the rest of us who are vocal have been punished, ostracized, or deemed too risky to book. Gatekeeping was used to PROTECT the marginalized, and now it is used to discriminate against us.
But most importantly, I deeply grieve the dancefloor. I haven't felt safe to go dancing in these spaces for years. It was my way of healing, connecting with myself and others, letting loose, and feeling so damn alive.
But I cannot do that in spaces that choose to be silent in the face of g3n0cide. I became a DJ because of my immense love of underground dance music, it shaped me as a person, it was my entire community, but today I feel so alone.
Yet I know I'm not alone, there are many who feel the same way. And that is why I'm so loud in my advocacy for reclaiming the underground alongside collective liberation, as you cannot have one without the other.
And I ask all of you reading this message, continue to support and uplift those that are taking on the risk of being loud and speaking up. We’re putting everything on the line, and we cannot do this without your help.
