I’m starting to get organised to take part in the Wirral Open Studio Tour organised by @wirralopenstudiotour on 13th & 14th June (& the evening of 12th June). I’m in Studio 33 in New Brighton which is on Rowson Street just off the main Victoria Road high street (see the blue arrow on the map in the photo). Several other studios will be open locally, as well as lots of others across the Wirral so take a look at the website to see other artists taking part. I’ll have lots of my hand embroidered tea strainers to see along with lots of other examples of my work. #textileartist #newbrightonartist

One of the most common questions I’m asked is what gave me the idea to embroidery onto tea strainers, sieves & tea infusers. I like to challenge stereotypes about textiles materials & techniques & a tea strainer is a great example of this. The metal mesh dome is made from woven wire in a similar way to a traditional woven fabric. Woven metals are used in a variety of industrial applications e.g. sieves, filters, fences, archectural panels. Extremely fine woven mesh (as well as knitted metals) can be used to make soft fabrics suitable for curtains & upholstery (look at fabircs produced by companies such as Inntex). I enjoy the quirky & fun nature of embroidering onto a functional kitchen tool & the surpise & double take when people realise what it is. A carousel with a little introduction to me, my career journey & my art work for anyone who’s interested. It was fun putting this together & finding photos although I did laugh at the late 80s perm in the last photo 🤣

I love working with bold colours as this piece of work shows. It also includes blanket stitch which is one of my favourite stitches. It’s a simple piece compared to some of the more complex ones I have on the go but it’s nice to be working on a few things at once as I can pick up the one that best fits my mood or amount of time I have. #textileartist #newbrightonartist #handembroidery

Making flowers for a new project using metal washers to create a 3D effect in the centre of each flower. Satin stitches are used to cover the metal and to fill the centre of the flower. Interfacing on the back of the flower helps keep the fabric stable whilst stitching. This is the first and I’ve got 27 more to make 😵‍💫 #textileartist #newbrightonartist #handembroidery

My husband has been having a clear out of some of his old watch and clockmaking bits and pieces as he wants to go back to his roots making traditional clocks again (he originally trained as a watch & clockmaker after leaving school but his career has taken him into all sorts of other directions since then). I finally managed to get my hands on some of the watch parts I’ve had my eyes on for years 😂They will make great beads and embellishments for my embroidery work😀 #textileartist #newbrightonartist #handembroidery

Artist Feature: Julie Boyd / @julieboydcreate Work on display @foxyardstudio .   Description: The artwork celebrates textiles traditions, as well encouraging the viewer to see textile techniques through a wider lens.  The surface of a tea strainer has been embroidered with a bold, vibrant design and this, along with the quirky tea strainer base, draws the viewer in. On closer inspection, the plain weave of the woven metal base peeks through the delicate embroidery stitches reminding us of traditional counted thread embroidery materials such as Aida.  The everyday object is ‘not a tea strainer’ anymore but an object where the juxtaposition of the traditional embroidery stitches and materials contrasts with the traditional technique of weaving made from an unexpected material. These ‘entangled realities’ challenge the viewer’s perception of what textile techniques and materials are and how they can be used. Website: /artistandmaker Work: 1. "Not a Tea Strainer: Entangled Realities" Hand embroidery on woven metal tea strainer Size of work: H19.5cm x W8cm x D3.5cm Size on display stand: H25.5cm x W10.5cm x D12.5cm Selling price: £145  (includes stand) Part of the "TEXTILES EXPLORATIONS" Exhibition at Fox Yard Studio, partnered with @artmagnitude . #textilesartist #contemporary #artexhibition #groupshow
