In the November issue of the magazine Mietraum² of 2025, Jana Madle-Elmerhaus used the typeface Altona to design a spread! Mietraum² is a magazine for members of Mieter helfen Mietern Hamburg (tenants help tenants Hamburg), which is published twice a year. The magazine informs about important topics concerning tenants, such as housing and urban policy, articles on tenancy law, social issues as well as environmental ones and more. Altona was designed by Albert-Jan Pool and Julia Uplegger, Antonia Cornelius contributed the icons and the small caps. Graphics by @bentebaseler at Dutch Design. Interested in knowing more about or even licensing Altona? Go to Link in Bio or to /fonts/altona #MieterHelfenMietern #MieterBeratung #Mietraum #QuadratMeter #AltonaTypeface #AltonaVariable #HamburgAltona #Altona #AltonaInUse #HamburgOttensen #Ottensen #FontsInUse #GeometricSerif #GeometrischeSerifenSchrift #ContemporaryType #MagazineDesign #MagazineTypography #GraphicDesign #GrafikDesign #EditoralDesign #CommunicationDesign #KommunikationsDesign #GermanDesign #WeLoveType #TypographyInspired #TypeSpire #TypeMatters #GoodType #TypeMates @albertjanpool @juliauplegger @legilux@typemates@ottensen_news

💙 With proud roots in Hamburg, Altona is a bold, distinctive and cosmopolitan display typeface inspired by the original street signs of the Altona district. Altona is a bold character – clearly constructed, yet unconventionally playful. Delicately engineered with an unpolished charm, Altona is a display typeface with perfect craftsmanship and a mind of its own. At the end of the 1920s, constructivism was in vogue. Contemporary typefaces and lettering not only reflected the familiar, they used geometry to explore new forms. Reflecting a desire for renewal and a prelude to modernism, they were a perfect fit for the generous social housing plans of the growing and modernising Hamburg district of Altona. Today is the day of DA Crime of the Century in Typodarium 2026. DA Crime of the Century is a typeface developed from our 2022 research on lettering in album covers. Inspired by the lettering of Supertramp’s self-titled album, it is conceived as a condensed display typeface. Type designer: @ariel.brandolini Typodarium is the prestigious calendar published by the German publisher Verlag Hermann Schmidt. Many thanks to everyone at Typodarium, and especially to Julia Uplegger, the project’s Art Director. @verlaghschmidt @juliauplegger #typodarium #typodarium2026 #DACrimeoftheCentury #arielbrandolini #designassociati

The Typodarium 2026 is here. Following last year’s celebrated edition, this one dives deeper into the world of modular typography. Curated by Lars Harmsen and @rabanruddigkeit , it features fonts by emerging designers from across the globe. One for every day of the year. The Typodarium has established itself as a source of inspiration in the world of typography and is eagerly awaited each year by designers and agency creatives. Every Sunday, it surprises with meta-trends: a hundred years after the Bauhaus moved to Dessau, it presents new modular fonts. What began as a formal aesthetic experiment by Josef Albers and Herbert Bayer is now experiencing a revival in the digital space of animated fonts and new geometric compositions. @verlaghschmidt (pub.), Lars Harmsen & Raban Ruddigkeit (editors), @juliauplegger (design), 12 × 8.5 × 6 cm, 365 fresh fonts by 330 designers from 39 countries #slanted #slantedpublishers #typodarium #2026 #calendar #typography

Today we want to celebrate one year of Altona and Alison with you! 🎉✨ The superfamily by Albert-Jan Pool and Julia Uplegger includes three strong serif typefaces, which were released last year. Altona preserves the beautiful, idiosyncratic letters of the historic street signs of the Altona district of Hamburg. Inspired by the same signs, Alison Head develops a powerful and expressive approach to a Didone, while Alison Text provides a reliable foundation for body text. Together the typefaces stand for new beginnings: Altona represents the rapid growth of the 1920s in an independent and social democratic city, while Alison represents an emancipated break with traditional models and approaches. Altona has more than 160 icons! Many of them relate directly to the history of Altona. Designed by Antonia Cornelius, the icons are emblematic of the emerging and modernising Altona of the time, and are still state of the art today: the weight axis of the variable font can be used to flexibly configure the weights of the pictograms and symbols. Alison has over 60 different symbols recognising different genders, because we believe all genders have equal values, which is why all the different gender forms in her suite of icons have the same weight. Like progress, any discussion, development and selection of gender symbols will be incomplete. Thus not all are (yet) represented by a Unicode. Interested in knowing more about or even licensing Altona, Alison Head and/or Alison Text? Go to Link in Bio or to /fonts/altona /fonts/alison-head /fonts/alison-text #AltonaTypeface #AlisonTypeface #HamburgAltona #AltonaAlison #AltonaVariable #AlisonHead #AlisonText #AlisonVariable #GenderSigns #GenderSymbols #Asterisk #NewFont #NewFonts #VariableFont #TypeMates #TypefaceDesign #TypeDesign #TypeDesigner #Schriftgestaltung #WeLoveLetters #TypeInspiration #TypeGoodness #LetterDesign #FontDesign #EyeOnDesign #TypeSpire #ContemporaryType @albertjanpool @juliauplegger @legilux@typemates

On 17th July in 1932 the National Socialist SA marched through Altona where the supporters of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and the SA clashed. There were deaths and injuries: 18 people were killed — four innocent people would be fated to die. However, the investigations were solely against suspected communists. The following trial resulted in the first political death sentences of the Nazi state. This is the day known as “Altona Bloody Sunday” (Altonaer Blutsonntag). More about Altona Bloody Sunday: /wiki/Altona_Bloody_Sunday Mehr über den Altonaer Blutsonntag: /wiki/Altonaer_Blutsonntag The Altona typeface family comes with an extensive set of 160 icons, pictograms and symbols in five weights. Their choice and design are mainly inspired by Hamburg and its district Altona, 60 directly relate to its history. Some, like the raised fist, refer to political issues or can be used to illustrate them. Designed by Antonia Cornelius, Altona’s icons are state of the art today: the weight axis of the variable font can be used to flexibly configure or animate the weights of the pictograms and symbols. Altona was designed by Albert-Jan Pool and Julia Uplegger, Antonia Cornelius contributed the icons and the small caps. Graphics by Antonia Cornelius at Dutch Design Interested in knowing more about or even licensing Altona? Go to Link in Bio or to /fonts/altona #AltonaTypeface #AltonaVariable #VariableFont #HamburgAltona #AltonaerBlutsonntag #AltonaBloodySunday #1932 #Germany1932 #RaisedFist #ErhobenerFaust #NieWiederIstJetzt #WirSindMehr #NazisRaus #GegenNazis #FCKNZS #KPD #KeinBockAufNazis #GeometricSerif #GeometrischeSerifenSchrift #TypeDesign #IconDesign #WeLoveLetters #TypeSpired #TypeInspiration #TypeGoodness #EyeOnDesign #TypeSpire #ContemporaryType #WeltEmojiTag #WorldEmojiDay @albertjanpool @juliauplegger @legilux@typemates

Altona’s extensive set of 160 icons, pictograms and symbols is also inspired by Hamburg’s district, and 60 of them directly relate to its history. They illustrate the city’s famous landmarks, different types of ships and means of transport, and offer a range of maritime and Hanseatic symbols, such as a Franzbrötchen. A Franzbrötchen is a sweet and buttery cinnamon pastry. Designed by Antonia Cornelius, Altona’s icons – like the famous Franzbrötchen – are state of the art today: the weight axis of the variable font can be used to flexibly configure the weight of the icons. Altona was designed by Albert-Jan Pool and Julia Uplegger, Antonia Cornelius contributed the icons and the small caps. Graphics by Antonia Cornelius at Dutch Design Interested in knowing more about or even licensing Altona? Go to Link in Bio or to /fonts/altona #AltonaTypeface #AltonaVariable #VariableFont #HamburgAltona #Franzbrötchen #ZimtGebäck #Pastry #CinnamonPastry #TypeMates #GeometricSerif #GeometrischeSerifenSchrift #TypeDesign #TypeDesigner #AlbertJanPool #JuliaUplegger #AntoniaCornelius #FontFoundry #WeLoveLetters #TypeSpired #TypeInspiration #TypeGoodness #LetterDesign #FontDesign #EyeOnDesign #TypeSpire #ContemporaryType @albertjanpool @juliauplegger @legilux@typemates

Social Housing Altona, 1920 Altona is inspired by a street sign lettering template from the interbellum. Today's Hamburg-Altona district was an independent city from the Hanseatic City of Hamburg at the time. Due to the Greater Altona Act initiated by the Social Democratic mayor Max Brauer, this period was characterised by rapid growth. The new lettering on Altona's street signs thus featured the new building projects for social housing planned by building senator Gustav Oelsner and mayor Max Brauer. Altona – with its unconventionally constructed geometric forms, which are orientated towards the Didonic style – bears witness to both the progressive character and the aspiring modernism of the interwar period and to its dazzling neighbourhoods and the diversity of the people who live here today. Gustav Oelsner was an architect, an urban planner and between 1924 and 1933 the senator for construction in Altona. Altona was designed by Albert-Jan Pool and Julia Uplegger, Antonia Cornelius contributed the icons and the small caps. Graphics by Antonia Cornelius at Dutch Design Interested in knowing more about or even licensing Altona? Go to Link in Bio or to /fonts/altona #AltonaTypeface #GustavOelsner #Licht #Light #LightFlooded #SocialHousingProject #Innovation #InterwarModernism #BacksteinExpressionismus #GeometricSerif #GeometrischeSerifenSchrift #TypeDesign #TypeDesigner #AlbertJanPool #JuliaUplegger #AntoniaCornelius #FontFoundry #WeLoveLetters #TypeSpired #TypeInspiration #TypeGoodness #LetterDesign #FontDesign #EyeOnDesign #TypeSpire #ContemporaryType #HamburgAltona #AltonaVariable #VariableFont #TypeMates @albertjanpool @juliauplegger @legilux@typemates
