How fabulous to see two excellent prints of @therealformika , @misssherryvine (and me) from the DQNY30 exhibition at @_howlarts exquisitely framed and hanging along side such greats as @debkass in the Brooklyn home of @kbolo71 and her gorgeous family. These photos by @thisisauthentic were some of the outtakes from the original sessions she shot for my book The Drag Queens of New York in 1995. We still got it! If you want prints of your own, DM me and l I’ll put you in touch with the gallery. No Kings! Just Queens! DQNY forevah!
This announcement is near and dear to the West Kortright Center as we are thrilled to announce that Julian Fleisher will be joining us on May 16th for an evening of music and jubilance.
Julian has made his home at @joespub for decades, and will be bringing his night club reveree to the mountains for one night only in just a few short weeks.
If you're somehow not already familiar, Julian's praises and accolades speak for themselves — though it is a show that can't properly be captured in words and must be experienced first hand to truly understand.
Ticket link is live in our bio — get them while you can!
One of those weekends that reminds you why you came to NYC in the first place. Saw my dear friend Tonya Pinkins give a sublime performance in the astonishing revival of The Wild Party at @nycitycenter , with ravishing orchestrations by my old drinking buddy and certifiable genius Bruce Coughlin. (Where I also took a moment to be manhandled by heartstopper @averywilson .) Former @joespub director @shantourage took me to see our luminous friend @mxviv (at what soon will be called Viv’s Pub) for her most uplifting tribute to Canadian TV show Heated Revelry. Downtown icon and budding artistic visionary @heatherlitteer curated and hosted her annual festival of fabulous artists “On the Verge” at @wildprojectnyc . And the whole thing got started at a reading of the new Rad Fae musical “Paradise Lost in Space” by, among others, old pal and brilliant wordsmith @mullteforme at Playwrights Horizons downtown studios. Monday is my day of rest, y’all.
It’s hard to know what to say about the loss of Agosto Muchado. He didn’t fear death and lived a life so full it almost defies belief. And since we all gotta go, I will just marvel that we got to be here at the same time as this truly great person. Street Queen, Artist, Performer, Survivor, Community Builder, Charmer…Friend. There’s a reason so few of us are universally adored. It’s because so few of us can move through this bitch of a world with the grace, humor, beauty and wisdom that Agosto did. I’ll miss this person. But I’m so grateful to have known them. Rest in all the beauty that you made, Queen. ❤️
Thanks to @hrhpd for reminding me that today marks the anniversary of the passing of the magnificent Mona Foot / Nashom Wooden, brightest star of the downtown scene for many years — and the first person I knew who was struck down by COVID. Mona was my gateway drug into the world of New York drag and, well, we know how that went. When, as an mildly innocent college kid, I first saw Mona at Boy Bar tearing the head off a lip-sync of Sweet Pussy Pauline, I lost my fucking mind. I threw myself at her like she was the fifth Beatle. And she handled it like a pro, god bless her. And kept handing it for, like, thirty years. We all miss Nashom, and for good reason. He truly was a great bunch of gals. May his memory be a blessing.
