OVERWHELMED with gratitude for my beautiful Maui community who took time out of their busy lives and showed up in force today at @bnkahului for a beautiful book signing and reading and made me feel so loved. Thank you @bnkahului for hosting this wonderful event and for now carrying The Girl and the Boat in the picture book section! Huge thank you Mary for your visionary help making this happen, and to my countless friends and family who have supported me through this whole book journey of many years. It was so heart-filling to share these paintings, this story, and origami fun with you today! I will always treasure this day. Special tearjerking highlights: So many of you showed up wearing my fabrics and I can’t even express how much that meant to me! Just the sweetest expression of love! 🎨And thank you @apgragas for surprising me by bringing your own @hadleypottery teapot and Girl and the Boat plate and wanting to keep it on my table for the whole duration of the event! I am so touched! 🫖 Incredibly special too to see Tehya, my main model, get asked to sign a book today too! 🖊️This brilliant girl brought the main character to life with her beautiful acting and spirit! Thank you to everyone who bought books for your own collection or for gifts for loved ones. It means the world to me. 🙏🏼 And as icing on top, thank you @makanaola and @apgragas for the deliciously intoxicating lei! 💐😭❤️ You can now find The Girl and the Boat at Maui’s @bnkahului in the picture book section any day! I am downright wowed to have this book amongst beautiful classics that inspired me to create it in the first place. ⛵️❤️ #thegirlandtheboat #thegirlandtheboatbook #barnesanenoble #mauiauthor #booksigning #juliaallissoncosttextiles #hadleypottery

A rare photo that shows 2 parts of my profession in one glance. My original oil painting, “Bowl of Paradise,” sold yesterday and is shipping off to its new home. I worked on this painting for the first many months of the year and spent the summer designing it into my #proteabouquettextile. It’s been a long labor of love and I’m so excited to see the original painting and the fabric heading to new homes to be loved. ❤️ Limited yardage of this fabric is available in cotton poplin, cotton double gauze, rayon, bamboo lycra and swim knit on my website, juliacost.com. Mahalo @islandprotea.maui for the handful of protea and banksia that inspired this work! Thank you @marcyharriell for the half circle skirt tutorial that helped me create my favorite skirt ever! #juliaallissoncosttextiles #oilpainting #handmadeskirt #fabricdesign #fabriclove #textiledesign #textileart #textileartist #textiledesigner #artistsoninstagram #makersofinstagram #handmadewardrobe #memadewardrobe #memade #fabricstore #fabricdesigner #fabricart #oilpainter #sewistsofinstagram #sewityourself #fabricboutique #fabriccollection #oiloncanvas #runwayfashion #protea #slowfashion #sewsewsew #slowfashionmovement #slowfashionstyle

The biggest project of my life. The Girl and the Boat is a wordless picture book filled with 30 oil paintings that weave together to tell a story of friendship, imagination, and creativity. 7 of the new fabrics in my collection are based on scenery in the book: Lemon Tree, Green Garden, Field of Flowers, Poppy Fields, Golden Fields, Edge of the Ocean, and Wildflower Mountain. You can sew to match the book! Order books and fabric at juliacost.com, link in bio. 🎨 PS: My dress is #fieldofflowerstextile cotton poplin as a vintage Pauloa Patterns 1029 dress. This fabric is based on a book painting you can spy on my website, one of the few inside pages I’ve revealed! Huge thanks to my amazing child models Tehya Artzi and Kaia Coon who brought this book to life with their wondrous spirits, and to their parents @mylene6361 , @ilanartzy , @mrsjennycoon and Riley for all their support. #juliaallissoncosttextiles #fabricdesign #fabriclove #textiledesign #textileart #textileartist #textiledesigner #artistsoninstagram #makersofinstagram #handmadewardrobe #memadewardrobe #memade #fabricstore #fabricdesigner #fabricart #sewistsofinstagram #sewityourself #fabricboutique #fabriccollection #childrensbook #slowfashion #sewsewsew #slowfashionmovement #handmadedress #painting #picturebook #childrensbookillustration #wearableart #bookillustration

50 years after my mom did @seaburyhallcraftfair , I can’t believe she and I got to do the 50th Seabury Craft Fair together. And I can’t believe that I am a textile designer following in her footsteps and that we are sewing all of our wares together with my fabrics, just like she used to do with her batik fabrics. To say I feel lucky is an understatement. I love you so much, mom. It is wild to see how @seaburyhallcraftfair is woven through the story of our lives. Thank you to this phenomenally beautiful school and all the people who make this amazing day happen. Thank you to everyone who came to our booth. My heart is overflowing with gratitude. #juliaallissoncosttextiles #motherdaughter #familybuisness

A reminder to listen to what someone wants! I love that my dad wanted this inside out Aloha shirt in my #dancingladyorchidtextile and I only regret waiting to make it for him! So proud of you dad! It was amazing hearing you tell your life story and thinking about the legacy you have created with of your paintings of Maui last night at @malamakula . Thank you for Kyle inviting my dad to tell his stories! PS: I used the @common_stitch #finchbuttonup pattern and the Dancing Lady Orchid cotton poplin. Fabric is available at juliacost.com, link in bio. #alohashirt #mauiartist

It is such a thrill and honor to see how brilliant sewists have transformed my paintings into garments beyond my wildest dreams! @luannesewcializes recently sewed this magnificent dress with my #dancingladyorchidtextile cotton poplin and my jaw is on the floor. She used the @closetcorepatterns #closetcoreedith pattern and hacked on the sleeves of the @sewaholic #granvilleshirt. The way the blooms are cascading diagonally across the dress is just stunning. Marvelous work in every detail, Lu-Anne! I can’t believe how well the fabric matches the painting on your wall too! See more of Lu-Anne’s exquisite sewing at her account @luannesewcializes . Dancing Lady Orchid is now back in stock in cotton poplin, and it is also available in corduroy, rayon, bamboo cotton gauze and swim knit! Find it at juliacost.com, link in bio. Soon I’ll share a project I recently made in this fabric for my dad, which is fitting as I painted some of his ‘Īao Valley painting in the background behind the dancing lady orchids, which is why this fabric has variegations of blue and green! 💙💛 #juliaallissoncosttextiles #sewinginspiration

@veronicraftbyvm saw a dress by Oscar de la Renta and knew she could figure out how to make it, using a dress she had already made in my #wildhibiscustextile rayon a few years ago. I so admire both the talent and skill it takes to refashion a dress, and the mindset that you can figure out how to make a garment that you aren’t wearing into a one that you will wear. That is so beautiful and one of the things that makes me so proud of and in awe of people who sew. Thank you so much for sharing this stunning project @veronicraftbyvm ! Check out Verónica’s work and her store! She teaches workshops in all sorts of arts from painting, to jewelry making to sewing! She sells beautiful wares that she makes in so many different artistic media. She is an unstoppable force of creativity! I am very honored that Verónica has sewn many pieces with my fabrics over the years! Find #wildhibiscustextile at juliacost.com, link in bio! #juliaallissoncosttextiles #sewingdress #upcylingfashion

My mom sewed me an amazing present! 🥰 She said she was tired of seeing me carrying big Tupperware containers when I deliver my wares to stores around the island, so she sewed me this gorgeous giant bag with my large scale #tinyvasetextile cotton poplin and lined it with sunshine yellow. She created a removable hard bottom for the bag to hold the shape. I love it so much!! And the best part is that it’s hands free so I can still carry an umbrella if I’m walking in the rain to deliver to a store! My mom is so talented and creative. So grateful for her! I actually had painted my mom’s collection of colorful glass vases for this fabric. So it’s full circle to have her sew something with it! Tiny Vase Textile is currently available in mini scale and medium scale cotton poplin on my website. It is also available in medium scale as bamboo cotton gauze, bamboo lycra, and corduroy! I would love to see what you would be inspired to create with it! #juliaallissoncosttextiles #handmadebag #sewingbag #fabricdesign

So so special and full circle!!! My talented cousin Tehana @tehanarodriguez , who I painted 4 times in my #hulawatercolortextile (pictured when she was 6 years old) has sewn her very first project ever, and she chose to use this fabric! Tehana sewed a dress for her little sister Hali’a with the help of my very talented aunty Beth @napiligigi who is a professional seamstress whose former career was sewing hula costumes for hālau on Maui! In this fabric, Tehana is pictured wearing the hula costumes of my cousin Tiana @hi2ny2hi who was a professional hula dancer starting in childhood for decades. Tiana is pictured in the fabric too! So sweet little Hali’a is wearing paintings of her big sister Tehana and her Aunty Tiana, painted by her cousin Julia with the whole sewing project mentored and made possible by her grandma’s sewing teaching! Swipe to see the paintings of Tehana at the end! So proud of you Tehana! What a beautiful gift for your little sister, and I can’t believe this the first project you’ve sewn! You and Gigi rock! Thank you @_noelle_rose for the pics of your amazing girls! Hula watercolor textile is currently sold out in cotton poplin but available in bamboo cotton gauze, which is what Tehana used for this dress! This print is also back in stock as linen cotton tea towels. Find it at juliacost.com, link in bio. 🌺 #juliaallissoncosttextiles #hulafabric #familystory #hula

What a FIND! 🔍 As we prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the SEABURY HALL Craft Fair, we were overjoyed to receive this sweet note, along with photos and a newspaper clipping from SEABURY HALL Alumna AND featured vendor, Julia Allisson Cost! Her mother was a vendor at the very first Craft Fair! From Julia: @juliaallissoncost “My mom (Jill Cost) just came across her copy of a Maui News article about the very first Seabury Craft Fair in 1976. My mom was a vendor in it and this article shows a picture of her! Thought you would like this for the Seabury records and maybe for promo heading to the 50th this year! (She just wanted to clarify that there is a mistake in the article- it says she is an O’ahu resident, and while she grew up on O’ahu, she had moved to Maui in 1973 so she was a Maui resident at the time of this article!) The fair has come so far since the very first one! Here is a color pic (photo 1) of her booth right in front of Cooper House. She was a batik artist and painted designs on fabric with wax, dip dyed them, and sewed all sorts of wares with her fabrics. It is so full circle that she helps me now with my fabric business and that we do fairs together 50 years later! And a pic of her and I running my booth (photo 2).” We’ve also attached photos of the newspaper clipping, @themauinews keep scrolling for enlarged scans for easier reading! Tag any names you might recognize!
