“We’re not supposed to be in the limelight. We’re supposed to be the scuttlebutt. We’re not supposed to be heroes. We’re supposed to be zeroes. If we look good, we look bad.” - Bill Danforth - Juice Magazine #63 This photo of Bill Danforth, to me, says it all, as he is known for his Pist Detroit outlook on life. This image of the American Nomad screams sarcasm, and the irony of being self-imposed on the cross of graffiti laughter doesn’t get lost. It was never for fame or awards, although Danforth can exist in both realms and not be happy about it, and we celebrate him for it. Danforth is a living paradox, notably as the only skateboarder in the Alva Posse not to have dreads or long hair, yet still he personified the badass attitude needed to be on the team. Cheers to our friend, and a friend to all. Photo and words by @JuiceDan #juicemagazine #skateboarding

“Every guy or girl at the park that I skate with means as much to me as some of the pros and legends I emulate because they keep me on my board. They all inspire me. I love watching people devote themselves to the discipline and the pain and pleasure that it takes to be 100% skateboarder.” Shark Dog - Juice Magazine #79 This photo of Shark Dog doing a backside boneless was taken at Angelo’s clover in Malibu with an amazing crew that made the this sundown session magical and heated. This pool is a pillar of the DIY spirit as Angelo put in the work with his friends to dig and pour it, making it a one-of-a-kind and a perfect challenge. It’s a concrete dream come true and Shark Dog has no trouble finding the lines. Shark Dog has become infamous for his “fuck yeah Fridays” so this one’s for you @shark_dog carrying on Kessler’s traditions and keeping NYC skateboarding on fire and inspired. “Skating and music both bring you to a place like nothing else I’ve found. When you’ve written a great song or pulled off a great move, it’s the same feeling of accomplishment. It’s an immeasurable, infinite sense of discovery.” - Ben Harper - Juice Magazine #75 This photo of Ben Harper was taken at his studio in Los Angeles for his interview in Juice #75. Walking into the studio was surreal, and you could feel the power of the vibe as his band The Innocent Criminals were tuning up and jamming. A big area rug covered the floor and Ben made it clear it gets removed for late night skate sessions, as he laughed and sat down to play. From note one, I immediately understood what makes him a musical genius and why he sells out venues all over the world. Ben is one of the coolest humans and his creative gift for music is nothing short of inspirational and bright, and, oh yeah, he is an absolute ripper when he skates as well.  “Jah Work is Never Done”. Thank you, Ben, for continuing to create and motivate the ride. Words and photo by @juicedan #juicemagazine #music

“When the great power shortage comes and destroys the digital archive of the country and there are no more petrol chemicals available at your gas station for your drive around, you’re going to find out that pedestrians and skateboarders and bike riders will inherit the universe.” - C.R. Stecyk III - Juice Magazine #69. This image of the illustrious C.R. Stecyk III was taken at Beyond The Streets in downtown Los Angeles with his provocative letterpress and dead stock paint cans. As Stecyk described, in this installation, the oldest paint used is a 1931 DuPont nitro cellulose lacquer from the Chrysler automotive line. Stecyk’s contributions to skate, surf, art, custom car and aerosol culture have been an influence for decades and continue to be studied and referenced by riders and scholars around the world. C.R. plays on another level, and this installation had so many layers and questions and answers all at the same time, and it was an honor to capture one of the greatest operators of our time. As C.R. stated, “Art is artifice. Artifice is subterfuge. Subterfuge is bending the truth, changing the dictates, trying to find different ways of doing things. That’s the essence of skateboarding.” Photo and description by @juicedan

“Kids now can have a career in skateboarding. It’s not like it was when we started, all rebels without a cause. We were terrorizing the streets and pools. Skateboarding was against the law. We had to build our own backyard ramps and find pools to skate.” - Christian Hosoi - Juice Magazine #62 This photo of Christian Hosoi was taken at one of the first sessions at the Venice Beach Skate Plaza at sunrise under the morning marine layer in September of 2009. The decks had not yet been poured and no coping was placed, so only airs, inverts, rock and rolls and non grinding tricks were allowed. Seeing Hosoi blast a method air in person was insane to me, like when you were a kid and you would ball up a piece of paper and shoot it at the garbage and yell “Jordan”. As a young skater, I would blast off a launch ramp and do a method and yell “Hosoi” in the same fashion. Christian is just pure style and fluidity in motion and I was honored and grateful to be able to capture this moment in history. And I will say it, “Ripping style Holmes.” Words and photo by @juicedan #juicemagazine #skateboarding

“Punk rock is the freedom to be who you want to be without hurting or restricting anyone else’s right to be who they want to be. Punk is definitely freedom. It’s freedom of spirit.” GBH with Jeff Ho - Juice #74 - Photo by Dan Levy ….. I shot this image of GBH and Jeff Ho on the legendary Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California. Both GBH and Jeff Ho are pioneers and protagonists of music, skate and surf culture who come from humble working class backgrounds. What they have and continue to gift to our cultures through their art is immeasurable. This day was surreal as the mutual respect GBH and Jeff had for each other was palpable and I think this image personifies it. Give Me Fire!!!!!! Words and photo by @juicedan #juicemagazine #punk

“She would bottom dwell at the indoor park and I would always heckle her. She went to another ramp and learned to drop in and then came back and dropped in at our ramp. I always liked her and, a few years later, I asked her out. Now we’re married and we have Audrey and Johnny who both love to skate! Nowadays we like to travel to skate spots and live a skater’s dream!” - Mark “Otis” Smith - Interview by Chris Collette - Juice Magazine #77 This photo was taken at Mark and Shannon’s dream backyard swimmer in Charleston, South Carolina, where they have hosted some of the most legendary sessions in East Coast history. Otis was on fire and it was insane to watch him stall his inverts and then somehow bring them in and gain speed towards the shallow end. Shannon is a badass, on and off her board, and the Smith’s offspring Audrey and Johnny rip as well. Otis and Shannon came up at a time where skateboarding was not something you did with your parents and, now, to see an entire family become lifelong skateboarders is amazing. We are grateful to the Smith family as they are our family, and a major motivation to skateboarding up and down the East Coast and beyond. “You just have to live. You have to keep going. You can’t be scared. You live for now.” Darren Navarrette -Juice Magazine #63 interview by Steve Olson This photo of Darren Navarrette was taken at one of the last sessions to go down at Kelly Belmar’s pool. Navarette was absolutely on fire that day and he was making backside methods over the channel look as easy as rolling in. Shout out to Pat Myers for giving me my first film camera and showing me the ropes on how it worked. This was one of my first rolls of Black and White that I ever shot and l was in suspense for days waiting for the film to come back. (For those who only know digital, imagine your screen on your camera broke and you had to wait to upload them to your computer 4 to 5 days later to see if you got the shot) This day and this photo was a big step in my journey as a photographer and thank you to Navarrette for giving me the opportunity to not be scared of it and giving me the chance to fire away on such an amazing session. description and photo by @juicedan #juicemagazine #skateboarding
