Plasticity/Desires- Other Animals Set and costumes design for Alex Morin @eternal.mermaid in collaboration with Angela Rassenti @angrasse Photos: @jeannedunn_ Dancers: Philippe Depelteau, @tsharlyyp & @cheline.raven Designed for seven dancing bodies, Plasticity/Desires deals with notions of individual and mutual desires. Set against an enveloping soundscape, an imposing mass of raw clay and a dark pool of water forms the landscape that these people shape and excavate, like the elements of human nature: instinct, resilience, adaptability, contemplation, creativity, imagination. The discharge of energy, sustained investment and relentlessness reveals a sensuality and abandonment in the performers. The archaeology of their desires manifests itself in an accumulation of gestures that articulate the memories, traces and sensations they carry within them. In this space, the presence of water serves as a portal to the fantasies and delusions of the individuals on stage, allowing them to slip into a space where our collective perceptions are altered. Choreography and Artistic Direction: Alexandre Morin Music and Sound Design: Jonathan Goulet Performers: Myriam Arseneault, Philippe Dépelteau, Sara Hanley, Chéline Lacroix, Mathieu Leroux, Justin De Luna and Charlie Prince Lighting Design: Karine Gauthier Dramaturg: Mathieu Leroux Costume Design: Angela Rassenti + Jonathan Saucier Set Design: Jonathan Saucier + Alexandre Morin Clay Consultant: Pascale Girardin Production Manager: Florence Cardinal-Tang + Elodie Lê (supported by Parbleux) Technical Director: Sophie Robert Production Assistance: Philippe Dépelteau and Wolfe Girardin Rehearsal Director: Emmanuelle Bourassa Beaudoin Scenic Painter: Véronique Pagnoux Assistant Painter: Vivienne Angelique Additional Assistance: Justine Bellefeuille, Camil Bellefleur

REPLICA- @apartists Set design in collaboration with @andreapena__ How and when does a landscape/an object falls under the qualifications of Archeological? Are artefacts only related to the past, aren't we simply in constant creation of artefacts of the future? Replica aims to question the assumption that things and bodies stop moving, and stay still, as they enter the archaeological record because all archaeology, irrespective of whether it is buried in the ground, or on the surface of a landscape, continues to act and have affect well beyond any intended uses that were made hundreds, if not, thousands of years ago. By creating this Garden, the goal was to generate ecosystematic conditions under which we can observe 2 universal bodies, heavenly creatures evolve and where the audience encounters them at a porous boundary between our world and theirs. Foucault's theory of heterotopias as worlds within worlds, mirroring and yet upsetting to what is outside is immensely in line with the feeling we wanted to create with this space. A modular landscape of caves, hills, mossy clairings, rivers and dangerous playgrounds where the material is loose and reveals how the body moves through it, adapts to new conditions, new forms of reality. The dispersion of the bird seeds (source of food, of work, of pleasure..) mixed with the water, the soil and under the radiating lights generate a cycle of life in itself.. suggesting that this environment is self regulating, self sustainable. Throughout the piece, we witness the erosion, excavation of the set design where the body becomes the vessel to a multiplication of voices from past eras to future odysseys the Universe will shape with or without the presence of humanity. Replica is an ode to our presence, our communal existence in the present moment on the large scale story unfolding since the beginning of Time.

Plasticity/Desires - Other Animals Set and costume design in collaboration with Angela Rassenti and Alex Morin. This process has thought me so much. Working with natural elements, clay, water, cotton denim to this scale.. it became extremely relevant that I wasn't going to have control. These elements are bound to their own sets of rules and bending them becomes a rather complicated and useless fight. Surrendering became my mantra. Listening carefully to what the elements want to be. Magnify the beauty of the chaos they create and let shine the way they age and get distressed. Frayed denim edges, rough and loose shapes, natural clay patina.. navigating through this piece became about picking when and where I would have control over all these parameters. It's all about the different ways these elements interacts. As for the space.. the goal was to create a big playground where encounters becomes significant, with materials and with one another. Surrendering to the geometry of the room and it's four massive columns, and use them as pillars, like anchors in the storm preventing the room to completely shift into chaos but still allowing to travel between reality and fantasy. Set Design process Anatomie d'un Moteur, Other Animals Agora de la danse, 2023 Sometimes materials speak for themselves and there's very little that needs to be done to evoke a feeling, a mood. The goal here was to create a space where film and live performance can coexist without competing for attention. Metal. Twisting, bending, rusting, grinding... Finding poetry in architectural and industrial shapes, visiting multiple workspaces dedicated to metalwork was so inspiring throughout the process. Understanding the different tools, the reaction to certain elements, the emotional response to a warm body resting against cold iron pipes... The set suggest a museal space where a self standing screen (refering to suburban abandoned billboards or cinepark theaters) and what looks like a contemporary sculpture of twisted and crushed metal parts that are shaped into an engine (we like to think of it as a mechanical bull) are on display. The screen is the main element, it's the duet partner of this solo. It offers a window into the workspace of Gabriel (Alex's brother) and into the forest junkyard, that could be debated to be the representation of the inner thoughts of Alex. Curating the rest of the space with simple objects such as benches, leather jackets, a motorcycle helmet, a bud light beer... was a way to introduce tipping points and anchors for the whole room to shift into fantasy and emancipation. Thank you Other Animals, especially Alex for sharing your story and building beautiful memories together. You've helped define my artistic vision as well as reinforce my own identity. @0theranimals @agoradanse Production: Other Animals Performer: Alex Morin Dramaturgy: Mathieu Leroux Sound Design/ Film: Jonathan Goulet Set/Costume Design: Jonathan Saucier Lighting Design: Marguerite Hudon Technical Director: Sophie Robert

Set and Costumes Creative process for Reset² by @vero_giasson Research around the concept of trajectory in space. From point A to point B by a multitude of detours and shortcuts. The high precision of the movements choreographed by Veronique Giasson and her desire to glide across the stage was calling for vastness and open air. Her brain analyzes the space almost mathematicaly, referencing to tools like topography and cartography. Inspired by large scale landscapes and limitless spaces, I designed a space where sky and ground merge into another.. creating a blank canvas where the main focus is the body and it's negociating of the environment. Such malleability permits to suggest different ecosystems throughout the piece ( field, mountain top, caves..) using light as a 5th character. The costumes blend in with the environment and are inspired by the layering systems of tech clothing mixed with more natural textures and prints to soften the image. Bogotà BTS action caught by @_bobbyleon and other little gems. All the attention and details that goes into the production of Bogotà makes for it's deepness and richness. Some of the beauty we withness is held by razor sharp strings and the dancers need to negotiate the right conditions to make it happen. The struggle and the process becomes the climax, chaos within the chaos. @apartists Latex pieces: @polina.alekseyevna

Creative process for the set of Bogotà by @apartists , Arsenal di Venezia 2023 Curating a space for dance is all about providing the necessary tools to generate body/material encounters and develop unique poetic language through these meetings. The space I designed for Bogotà is one of construction and destruction of life and death. It's a space for "play" and "living" with set rules but with infinite possibilities of breaking those set rules and explore rebellion against order, dive into chaos. Referencing the perpetual state of renovation/transformation seen in the streets of Colombia and the passage of time on materiality, the scaffoldings also gives the dancers the opportunity to perform on a vertical axis. Climbing up, reaching higher grounds, to rule over, to fly.. all symbols associated with the divine, a parallel world of creatures and mythology. Using objects as vessels to navigate through the different layers of this piece engages a notion of voyage, of constant movement to the fine borders between magic and reality. Rolling on metal carts like godly creatures, being dragged on demolition bags as a pile of stones..all these elaborate paths lead to one simple question.. We are all going somewhere, but where? It is right in that mystery that Bogotà chooses to anchor itself and explore a multitude of possibilities. After all, isn't the voyage more important than the destination? Thanks to all collaborators who made this possible: @chanel.tires @dalphondh @debbiedoee Conrad St-Gelais
