🥰 There is absolutely no way to truly explain the experience in these photos so I’m going to have to make a video later! 🥰 After finally resting after a crazy couple of weeks, I’m so happy and thankful to share an amazing time at Penland. Made possible by the city of Virginia Beach ( @vabeacharts ) with their generous artist grant, I was able to take the Tunnel Book Workshop instructed by Jinghong Chen ( @jinghongart ). At this workshop I learned how to plan, prototype, and successfully build a tunnel book. This version “Beans and Weenies” is practice for a larger series I intend to construct about the city of Virginia Beach and its history. Keep a lookout because there is more to come! This piece was finished just in time for, Unsung, an exhibit organized by @thewomxnsconnective that’s going to be at @zekesnfk May 23rd. Here is my statement about the piece: The term Radium Girls refers to women who worked in factories during the 1920s who developed illness by painting watch faces with Radium 226. There were three major producers of these products in the United States: Radium Dial Company in Illinois, United States Radium Corporation in New Jersey, and Waterbury Clock Company in Connecticut. Unfortunately, many workers developed ☢️Radium Jaw☢️, which essentially caused the bone in the jaw to break down. ✨Five women: Grace Fryer, Katherine Schaub, Quinta McDonald, Albina Larice, and Edna Hussman sued United States Radium Corporation leading to the development of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).✨ These women helped pave the way to ensuring safe working conditions were a requirement for all workers. 5 women, 3 companies, and one problem: Radium-226. 🚨update: the clock does work🚨 #neonnfk #757artists #womenshistory

I’m ecstatic and honored to announce that I won an Addy for promotional materials I created for last years Neon Fest in Norfolk. I was lucky enough to work as an active committee member for this project with @757_create to help promote the activation, Lunatique.
