Last weekend I had the honor of being invited to sing at Dean Shelly Berg’s retirement celebration, alongside fellow Frost School of Music alumni: my fellow classmate and Broadway star, Trent Saunders, and other legendary artists (Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada and more!) Coming back to campus with Trent was deeply nostalgic but even more so because we were singing with Shelly again. Even as young freshman, Shelly invited us to sing at many fundraising events for the school, and continued throughout our time there. After college, he and his wife Julia continued to keep in touch and show their support by attending some of my shows, which I was always so appreciative of. I’ve been fortunate to experience his talent and unfettered joy for music first hand. He is truly someone who is driven by a passion to create opportunities of expansion for artists and for music education. His legacy is visible in his connections and the unbelievable, new, world-class facilities at the music school. There are moments as musicians where you feel an unforgettable type of synergy and pure elation in doing what you love to do. Standing around the piano in Shelly’s office, rehearsing 15 years later with Trent was one of those moments. Bringing my bestie of 30 years (and fellow U alum) as my plus one was the cherry on top and a crazy full circle moment.
